[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Inbound sales Sales # Inbound sales In short Inbound sales is a selling approach in which reps work with prospects who have raised their hand first, for example by requesting a demo, downloading content, or starting a trial. The conversation begins from the buyer’s stated interest, not from a cold approach. It sits at the sales end of an inbound motion. Marketing attracts and captures interest; inbound sales reps respond fast, qualify the need, and guide the buyer through evaluation. ## How inbound sales works ### Capture and route A form fill, chat, or trial signup creates a lead. Routing rules assign it to the right rep based on territory, segment, or round robin. ### Respond quickly Interest fades fast. Teams usually set a target response time, often measured in minutes, and track it. ### Qualify and personalize Review what the person did before the call: pages viewed, content downloaded, company details. Open with that context and ask about the need behind it. ### Advise through evaluation Inbound buyers have often researched already. Reps add value by clarifying options, handling risks, and involving other stakeholders. --- ## Inbound vs. outbound sales * **Trigger:** Inbound responds to buyer action; outbound starts with seller action. * **Intent:** Inbound leads show some interest; outbound prospects may not know they have a need. * **Control:** Outbound lets you choose target accounts; inbound depends on who finds you. --- ## Metrics to watch * **Speed to lead:** Time from form submission to first contact. * **Lead-to-meeting rate:** How many inbound leads become booked conversations. * **Win rate by source:** Which channels bring leads that actually close. --- ## Common mistakes * **Treating every lead as ready:** A content download is weaker than a pricing request. Score and prioritize. * **Slow follow-up:** A lead that waits days often goes to a competitor. * **Ignoring fit:** Inbound brings off-profile leads too. Check them against your ideal customer profile. * **Relying only on inbound:** Volume depends on marketing; pairing with outbound covers accounts that never find you. --- ## Inbound sales FAQs **What is inbound sales?** Inbound sales is a sales approach where reps engage prospects who have already shown interest, such as by requesting a demo, filling out a form, or starting a trial. The rep responds to that interest and helps the buyer evaluate options. **What is the difference between inbound and outbound sales?** Inbound sales responds to leads who contacted you or engaged with your content. Outbound sales starts with the seller contacting chosen prospects who may not be aware of a need. Many teams run both side by side. **How fast should you respond to an inbound lead?** As fast as practical, ideally within minutes for high-intent requests such as demo forms. Set a clear target, route leads automatically, and track response time, because interest declines quickly after the buyer submits a request. **Are inbound leads better than outbound leads?** Not always. Inbound leads show interest, which often means higher conversion, but they may not fit your ideal customer profile. Outbound lets you target the best-fit accounts. Evaluate both by win rate and deal size.
