Signals & Intent

# Job change signals

In short

Job change signals are notifications that a person has moved to a new employer or taken a new role. In GTM they help you track champions, past buyers, and new decision makers as they move.

New leaders often review tools and vendors in their first months. A contact who loved your product at one company may bring it to the next, and a new executive at a target account may be open to change.

## Types of job change signals

### Champion moves

A past user or buyer joins a new company. This is often the warmest outreach you can do.

### New leader at a target account

A new VP or head of a function often reassesses the stack and priorities.

### Departure from an account

When your contact leaves, you need a new contact at that account and may risk churn.

### Internal promotion

A contact moving up gains budget authority and may need different messaging.

## How to act on job changes

Say a customer champion moves to a new company that fits your ICP. A rep sends a congratulatory, specific note and offers help getting started, instead of a hard pitch.

* **Track champions and past buyers:** Maintain a list of people who know your product.
* **Watch target account leadership:** Set alerts for new hires in roles you sell to.
* **Reach out within weeks:** New leaders are most open early, before plans are fixed.
* **Update the CRM:** Fix contacts so records do not go stale.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Pitching immediately:** Lead with relevance and relationship, not a demo ask.
* **Ignoring departures:** A churned champion is a risk signal for the old account.
* **Stale data:** Acting on a move that happened months ago looks careless.
* **No fit check:** Make sure the new company matches your ICP first.

## Data caveats

Job change data often comes from public profiles and can lag. Verify the move before sending outreach, and respect privacy rules where you operate.

## Job change signals FAQs

**What are job change signals?**

Job change signals are alerts that a contact has started a new role or joined a new company. Sales teams use them to re-engage champions, reach new decision makers, and update contact records.

**Why are job changes a good sales trigger?**

New leaders often review vendors and tools in their first months, and past champions may bring a product they trust to a new company. That makes job changes a timely reason to reach out with a relevant message.

**How do you track job change signals?**

Use a data provider or alert tool to monitor past buyers, champions, and key roles at target accounts. Route alerts to the right rep, verify the change, and respond within a few weeks while the move is recent.

**What should you say to a champion who changed jobs?**

Congratulate them, keep it specific to their new role, and offer help rather than a hard pitch. Ask whether they face similar challenges at the new company and let the conversation develop naturally.
