[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Key account strategy Sales # Key account strategy In short A key account strategy is a documented plan for how a company will win, serve, and grow its most valuable accounts. It decides which accounts qualify as key, who owns them, and what each one should be worth in the coming year. It differs from key account management, which is the ongoing day-to-day work. The strategy is the plan; management is the execution. Key accounts are typically a small share of customers that make up a large share of revenue or strategic value. ## What a key account strategy covers ### Selection criteria Define what makes an account key: current revenue, growth potential, strategic fit, brand value, or influence in the market. Write the rules down so selection is not political. ### Ownership and coverage Name an account owner and a supporting team, which might include customer success, a solutions expert, and an executive sponsor. ### Account goals Set targets per account: revenue, products adopted, new business units reached, and renewal terms. ### Relationship map List the stakeholders at the account, their role, and who on your side has a relationship with each. --- ## How to build one * **Step 1:** Rank accounts using your selection criteria and pick a manageable number per owner. * **Step 2:** Research each account: goals, structure, risks, and current spend with you. * **Step 3:** Write a short plan per account with objectives, actions, owners, and dates. * **Step 4:** Review progress on a fixed rhythm, such as a quarterly business review. --- ## Example Say a software company has one customer using a single product in one department. The strategy sets a goal to expand to two more departments within a year, assigns an executive sponsor, and plans a joint review each quarter to track adoption and surface new needs. --- ## Common mistakes * **Too many key accounts:** If everything is key, nothing gets special attention. * **Relying on one contact:** Broaden relationships so a job change does not put the account at risk. * **Plans that sit in a document:** Review and update plans regularly or they become stale. --- ## Key account strategy FAQs **What is a key account strategy?** A key account strategy is a plan for how a company will win, serve, and grow its most valuable customers.
