# LAER objection handling

In short

LAER is an objection-handling framework that stands for Listen, Acknowledge, Explore, and Respond. It is widely taught as a simple routine for dealing with buyer resistance.

The idea is that rushing to an answer often addresses the wrong problem. Exploring first lets the rep respond to the actual concern.

## The steps

### Listen

Let the buyer say everything they want to say first.

### Acknowledge

Show you understand. This lowers defensiveness on both sides.

### Explore

Ask open questions to learn what is driving the objection, such as past experience, budget limits, or internal pressure.

### Respond

Reply to the specific issue you uncovered, ideally using the buyer's own words.

---

## Example in a call

Buyer: "We do not have time to implement this." Rep listens, acknowledges: "Time is short for most teams." Then explores: "What did past rollouts look like for you?" The buyer describes a long IT queue. The rep responds with how setup works without IT and offers a short pilot.

---

## When to use it

* **Price and timing objections:** Where a quick, structured reply keeps momentum.
* **Live calls:** The steps are short enough to run in conversation.
* **Coaching:** Reps can practice and review each step separately.

---

## How it differs from similar frameworks

LAER is nearly the same as LACE: Explore and Respond replace Clarify and Explain. LAARC adds an extra confirmation step, and ARC drops the listening and exploring steps. LAIR, a related model, uses Inquire and Respond. All share the principle of understanding before answering.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Skipping the listen step:** Replying before the buyer finishes makes the answer miss the real concern.
* **Treating it as a script:** Buyers notice recited lines. Use your own words.
* **Not asking for the next step:** A good response should end with a question or a clear action.
* **Solving the wrong objection:** The first objection is often a stand-in. Ask a follow-up to find the real one.

## LAER objection handling FAQs

**What does LAER stand for in sales?**

LAER stands for Listen, Acknowledge, Explore, and Respond. It is a four-step objection-handling framework. Reps hear the objection, show they understand, ask questions about the cause, and then reply to the specific concern.

**How do you use LAER to handle sales objections?**

Listen fully, acknowledge the concern, ask open questions to explore its cause, and then respond directly to what you learned. Close by checking whether the answer helps and agreeing on a next step.

**What is the difference between LAER and LACE?**

LAER and LACE are close variants. LAER uses Explore and Respond, while LACE uses Clarify and Explain. Both put understanding before answering. Teams usually pick the one whose wording is easier for reps to remember.

**Why explore an objection before responding?**

The first objection a buyer raises is often a proxy for something else, such as risk or internal politics. Exploring reveals the real concern, so your answer addresses it instead of wasting time on a point the buyer does not care about.
