[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Lead management RevOps & Pipeline # Lead management In short Lead management is the set of processes and rules a team uses to handle leads from the moment they are captured until they convert to an opportunity, move to nurture, or are closed out. It covers capture, enrichment, scoring, routing, follow-up, and reporting. The goal is that every lead gets the right response quickly, and that no lead is lost between marketing and sales. ## Stages of lead management ### 1. Capture Leads arrive from forms, events, outbound lists, referrals, and partners. Record the source for every one. ### 2. Enrich and clean Fill in missing company and contact details and remove duplicates so scoring and routing work on reliable data. ### 3. Qualify and score Apply fit and engagement criteria to decide which leads go to sales now and which need more nurturing. ### 4. Route and follow up Assign the lead to the right owner by territory, segment, or round robin, with a clear time limit for the first response. ### 5. Nurture or recycle Leads that are not ready go into a nurture track and return to sales when they show new interest. --- ## Lead management vs. lead generation Lead generation creates new leads. Lead management decides what happens to them afterward. Strong generation with weak management wastes spend. --- ## Example Say a team agrees that a lead must be contacted within one business day. A report on leads older than that window with no activity shows exactly where the process leaks, and a routing rule can fix it. --- ## Common mistakes * **No shared definitions:** If marketing and sales disagree on what qualified means, leads bounce between teams. * **Slow follow-up:** Response time often decides whether a lead converts. Set and monitor a service-level target. * **Dead-end statuses:** Leads with no next step sit forever. Give every status an exit. * **Untracked sources:** Without source data you cannot tell which channels produce pipeline. --- ## Lead management FAQs **What is lead management?** Lead management is the process of capturing, enriching, qualifying, routing, nurturing, and tracking leads from first contact until they become opportunities or are disqualified, so none are lost or ignored. **What are the steps in a lead management process?** Typical steps are capture, enrichment and cleanup, qualification and scoring, routing to an owner, timely follow-up, and nurturing or recycling leads that are not ready. Reporting on each step shows where leads stall. **How is lead management different from lead generation?** Lead generation is about creating new leads through campaigns and outreach. Lead management covers what happens after a lead exists: qualification, routing, follow-up, and nurturing. Both are needed to turn interest into pipeline. **What tools are used for lead management?** Most teams use a CRM as the base, plus marketing automation for capture and nurturing, enrichment for data quality, and routing or scheduling tools. The process and shared definitions matter more than the specific software.
