[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Lead qualification Sales Development & Prospecting # Lead qualification In short Lead qualification is the act of judging whether a lead matches your target customer and has the need, budget, and timing to buy. Leads that pass go to sales; the rest are nurtured, recycled, or dropped. Good qualification protects rep time and keeps pipeline honest. It does not try to predict every deal; it removes the clear misses early. ## What you assess when qualifying a lead * **Fit:** Does the company match your ideal customer profile by industry, size, and region? * **Need:** Does it have the problem your product solves? * **Authority:** Is this person, or someone they can reach, able to decide or influence? * **Timing:** Is there a reason to act now, such as a deadline or a trigger event? --- ## Common qualification frameworks Frameworks give reps a shared checklist so qualification is consistent. ### BANT Budget, authority, need, and timeline. Simple and fast, but can be rigid for complex deals. ### Fit and intent Many teams combine a fit check on the account with a behavior check on the lead. A lead needs both to be worth a call. --- ## Example Say an inbound request comes from a 30-person software firm in your target region. The SDR confirms the company fits, asks about the current process in a short call, learns a rollout is planned next quarter, and books an AE meeting. A second lead from a one-person agency fails the fit check and goes to a nurture track. --- ## Common mistakes * **Qualifying too late:** Reps chase leads for weeks before checking basic fit. * **Over-qualifying:** Too many questions on a first call push buyers away. * **Unwritten criteria:** Each rep uses different rules, so handoffs are disputed. * **Ignoring disqualified leads:** Not-now leads should enter nurturing, not disappear. --- ## Lead qualification vs. lead scoring Qualification is a decision, usually involving a human. Scoring is a ranking, usually automated, that helps decide who to qualify first. --- ## Lead qualification FAQs **What is lead qualification?** Lead qualification is the process of deciding whether a lead fits your target customer and is ready enough to pursue. It checks fit, need, authority, and timing so that sales time goes to prospects with a realistic chance of buying. **Who is responsible for lead qualification?** It varies by team. Marketing often does initial qualification through scoring and forms, then SDRs confirm fit and interest through outreach or a call, and AEs take over once a lead is accepted as a sales opportunity. **What are the criteria for a qualified lead?** Common criteria are fit with your ideal customer profile, a real business need, someone with authority or influence, and a reasonable timeline. Each team should write its own criteria so every rep applies them the same way. **What is the difference between lead qualification and lead scoring?** Lead qualification is the decision about whether a lead is worth pursuing, often made by a person. Lead scoring is a numeric ranking, usually automated, that helps prioritize which leads to qualify first.
