[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Lead signals Signals & Intent # Lead signals In short Lead signals are observable behaviors and traits of an individual contact that suggest interest or fit. Examples include opening and replying to emails, visiting key pages, attending webinars, and holding a relevant job title. They apply to the person. Account signals describe the company. Together, the two help teams decide who to contact, when, and with what message. ## Types of lead signals ### Behavioral signals Actions such as email clicks, pricing page visits, demo requests, and content downloads. Stronger actions carry more weight. ### Demographic signals Job title, seniority, and department show whether the person can influence a purchase. ### Contextual signals Recent job changes, a company event, or a topic they follow add timing and relevance. --- ## How to use lead signals Say a lead attends a webinar, then views your pricing page and integration docs within days. A rep should reach out with a personal note rather than leave the lead in an automated nurture. * **List your signals:** Write down actions that have preceded purchases in the past. * **Weight them:** Give a pricing page visit more points than a blog read. * **Add decay:** Reduce score as activity gets older. * **Route by threshold:** Send leads above a set score to a rep and keep others in nurture. --- ## Common mistakes * **Counting all activity equally:** A link click is not the same as a demo request. * **Ignoring fit:** Active leads at poor-fit companies can distort priorities. * **Never revisiting the model:** Check which signals actually correlate with closed deals and adjust. * **Missing context in handoff:** Reps need to see what the lead did, not only a score. --- ## Lead signals vs. account signals Lead signals describe a person. Account signals describe the company, such as funding or hiring. Strong prioritization uses both. --- ## Lead signals FAQs **What are lead signals?** Lead signals are behaviors and traits of an individual contact that suggest interest or fit, like email replies, key page visits, webinar attendance, and relevant job titles. Teams use them to decide who to contact first. **What is the difference between lead signals and account signals?** Lead signals describe an individual person, such as what they clicked or their job title. Account signals describe the company, such as funding, hiring, or technology changes. Combining both gives a more reliable view of priority. **Which lead signals matter most?** Actions closest to purchase usually matter most, such as demo requests, pricing page visits, and replies to sales emails. Check your own past deals to see which signals preceded wins, then weight those highest. **How do you use lead signals in lead scoring?** Assign points to behaviors and attributes based on how strongly they predict conversion, reduce points as activity ages, and route leads above a set threshold to sales. Review the model regularly against closed deals.
