# Market development funds (MDF)

In short

Market development funds (MDF) are money a vendor sets aside to help its channel partners run marketing and demand generation for the vendor's products. The partner spends on approved activities, and the vendor reimburses or co-funds them.

MDF is common in partner programs for resellers, distributors, and agencies. It aligns incentives: the vendor gets pipeline in a market it may not reach well alone, and the partner gets support for programs it might not fund by itself.

## How MDF works

### 1. Funds are allocated

The vendor sets MDF budgets, often tied to partner tier or past sales. Higher-performing partners usually receive more.

### 2. The partner submits a plan

The partner proposes an activity, such as an event or a campaign, with a budget and expected results.

### 3. The vendor approves it

The vendor checks the plan against its rules, such as eligible activities and brand guidelines.

### 4. The partner runs it and claims reimbursement

After the activity, the partner submits proof of performance, such as invoices and lead results, and the vendor pays its share.

## What MDF typically covers

* **Events and webinars:** Partner-run or co-hosted sessions.
* **Digital campaigns:** Email, paid search, and social programs.
* **Content and collateral:** Co-branded material approved by the vendor.
* **Training:** Certifications that help partner reps sell.

---

## How to measure MDF

Track what each funded activity produced: leads, opportunities, pipeline, and closed revenue. Compare cost per opportunity across partners and activity types, and shift funds toward what converts.

---

## Example

Say a software vendor gives a reseller a quarterly MDF allocation. The reseller proposes a webinar for its mid-market clients. The vendor approves it, reimburses half the cost after receiving the attendee list, and later checks how many attendees became opportunities.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Funds used as discounts:** Partners treat MDF as free money rather than a way to create pipeline.
* **No proof of performance:** Without results data, the vendor cannot judge return.
* **Unused budgets:** Slow approvals or unclear rules leave funds unspent.
* **Weak lead handoff:** Leads from funded activity must route fast to the right rep or partner.

## Market development funds (MDF) FAQs

**What are market development funds (MDF)?**

Market development funds are budgets a vendor provides to channel partners to pay for marketing activities that generate demand for the vendor's products. Partners spend on approved activities and the vendor reimburses or co-funds the cost.

**How do you qualify for market development funds?**

Requirements vary by vendor. Partners usually need to be in good standing in the vendor's partner program, meet a tier or sales threshold, and submit an activity plan that follows the program's approved uses and brand rules.

**What is the difference between MDF and co-op funds?**

Both are vendor-supported marketing budgets for partners. Co-op funds are typically accrued as a percentage of partner sales, while MDF is often allocated by the vendor for specific growth programs. Terms differ by company, so check each program's rules.

**How do you measure the ROI of market development funds?**

Track leads, opportunities, pipeline, and revenue created by each funded activity, then divide the cost by those outcomes. Compare partners and activity types and move budget toward the ones with the lowest cost per opportunity.
