[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Marketing accepted lead Marketing # Marketing accepted lead (MAL) In short A marketing accepted lead (MAL) is a lead that the marketing team has reviewed and accepted as having enough fit and interest to move forward in the funnel. The exact meaning varies between companies, so confirm how your team uses it. Most often a MAL sits just before or alongside the marketing qualified lead stage: marketing has looked at the lead, confirmed it is real and relevant, and approved it for further nurture or handoff. It is different from a sales accepted lead, where sales makes the acceptance decision. ## Where MAL fits in the funnel Teams use MAL in a few ways. Pick one and write it down. * **As a review step:** Leads that hit a score are checked by marketing ops for duplicates, spam, and fit, then marked MAL. * **As a pre-MQL stage:** The lead has shown interest and fit, but is not yet ready for sales. * **As an alias for MQL:** Some teams use the two terms for the same stage. --- ## How to define a MAL * **Fit:** Match the target profile by industry, size, and region. * **Engagement:** Meaningful actions such as content downloads, event attendance, or repeat visits. * **Data quality:** Valid email, real company, and no duplicate in the CRM. * **Clear exit:** Write down what moves a MAL to MQL or sends it back to nurture. --- ## Example Say a lead downloads a guide and attends a webinar. Marketing ops checks that the company is real, in the target segment, and not already an opportunity. The lead is marked MAL and enters a nurture track until it hits the MQL score or requests a demo. --- ## MAL vs MQL vs SAL A MAL has been accepted by marketing. An MQL has met the criteria to be passed to sales. A sales accepted lead has been taken by sales for follow-up. Think of them as sequential gates, each with a different owner. --- ## Common mistakes * **No written definition:** Unclear stages make conversion reports meaningless. * **An extra stage with no purpose:** If a MAL adds delay without improving quality, remove it. * **No time limit:** Leads can sit in MAL forever. Set a review period. --- ## Marketing accepted lead FAQs **What is a marketing accepted lead (MAL)?** A marketing accepted lead is a lead that marketing has reviewed and approved as having enough fit and interest to move forward. It often sits just before or alongside the marketing qualified lead stage, and its meaning varies by company. **What is the difference between a MAL and an MQL?** A MAL is accepted by marketing after review. An MQL has met the criteria to be handed to sales. Some teams treat MAL as an earlier review step and others use the two terms interchangeably, so define it internally. **What is the difference between a marketing accepted lead and a sales accepted lead?** A marketing accepted lead is approved by the marketing team. A sales accepted lead has been taken on by sales for follow-up after handoff. They are separate gates owned by different teams in the lead lifecycle. **Do you need a MAL stage?** Not always. A MAL stage helps when marketing needs to clean and check leads before handoff. If it adds delay without improving lead quality, it is better to remove it and go straight to MQL.
