# Marketing flywheel

In short

The marketing flywheel is a growth model in which marketing, sales, and customer success work as one loop. Each happy customer adds energy back into the system through referrals, reviews, and repeat business, so growth gets easier over time.

It contrasts with the funnel, which treats a closed deal as the end. In a flywheel, the customer is both the output and an input for the next round of acquisition.

## How the flywheel works

* **Attract:** Content, community, and outreach draw in the right accounts.
* **Engage:** Sales and marketing build relationships and solve the buyer's problem.
* **Delight:** Onboarding and support help customers get results quickly.
* **Amplify:** Happy customers refer, review, and expand, which feeds the attract stage.

---

## Flywheel vs. funnel

* **Funnel:** Linear. Prospects enter at the top and customers exit at the bottom.
* **Flywheel:** Circular. Customer success drives new demand, and friction anywhere slows the whole loop.

---

## How to build one

### 1. Find your strongest loops

Ask which sources produce the best customers. Common loops are referrals, user-generated content, partner introductions, and customer case studies.

### 2. Remove friction

Look for handoff delays between sales and onboarding, or slow support responses. These slow momentum more than a missing campaign does.

### 3. Make advocacy easy

Ask at the right moment, such as after a successful milestone, and give customers a simple way to introduce you or leave a review.

### 4. Measure the loop

Track referral share of pipeline, net revenue retention, review volume, and time to first value alongside new-logo numbers.

---

## Example

Say a software team improves onboarding so customers hit a key result in two weeks. Those customers agree to a case study and introduce a peer. The case study then shortens sales cycles for similar accounts, and the loop strengthens.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating it as a rebrand of the funnel:** A flywheel needs real investment after the sale.
* **Ignoring the weakest link:** A strong top of loop cannot overcome poor retention.
* **Expecting fast results:** Compounding effects take quarters to show.

## Marketing flywheel FAQs

**What is a marketing flywheel?**

A marketing flywheel is a circular growth model where satisfied customers generate referrals, reviews, and expansion that feed back into acquisition. Sales, marketing, and customer success work as one loop rather than a one-way funnel.

**How is the marketing flywheel different from the marketing funnel?**

A funnel is linear and ends at the purchase. A flywheel is a loop where customers keep adding momentum through advocacy and repeat business, and friction at any stage slows the whole system, including after the sale.

**What are the stages of a marketing flywheel?**

Common versions use attract, engage, and delight, sometimes with an amplify step for advocacy. The names vary by company, but the idea is the same: each stage should hand energy to the next and back to the start.

**How do you measure a marketing flywheel?**

Track loop indicators such as referral share of pipeline, net revenue retention, review and case study volume, time to first value, and how often customers become sources of new opportunities, alongside regular new-customer metrics.
