# Marketing funnel

In short

A marketing funnel is a model of the stages a buyer passes through, from first awareness of a problem to a purchase decision. It is called a funnel because volume narrows at each stage as some prospects drop out.

Marketing teams use it to match content and channels to each stage and to measure where prospects stall. It covers the marketing-owned part of the journey; the sales funnel picks up where qualified leads are handed to sales.

## The main stages

* **Top of funnel:** Awareness. Buyers notice a problem. Content is educational, such as blog posts, social, and podcasts.
* **Middle of funnel:** Consideration. Buyers compare approaches. Guides, webinars, and case studies help.
* **Bottom of funnel:** Decision. Buyers pick a vendor. Demos, pricing pages, and proof such as customer references matter most.

---

## How to use it

Map each stage to a goal, a content type, and one conversion metric. For example, top of funnel might track new visitors from target accounts, middle of funnel might track content engagement and form fills, and bottom of funnel might track demo requests. Then compare conversion between stages to find the biggest drop.

---

## Where the model falls short

Real B2B journeys are not linear. Buying groups loop back, research privately, and skip stages. Much of the research happens in places you cannot track. Treat the funnel as a planning tool for coverage, not a literal description of buyer behavior, and pair it with signals of account-level interest.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Only feeding the top:** Lots of traffic with no bottom-of-funnel content leaves demand unconverted.
* **Counting leads, not quality:** Measure conversion to opportunity and revenue.
* **Gating everything:** Heavy forms on early-stage content shrink reach.
* **Ignoring existing customers:** Retention and expansion are part of growth, which a one-way funnel hides.

## Marketing funnel FAQs

**What is a marketing funnel?**

A marketing funnel is a model of the stages a buyer goes through, from awareness to consideration to decision. Marketers use it to plan content and channels for each stage and to measure where prospects drop off.

**What are the stages of a marketing funnel?**

The common stages are awareness at the top, consideration in the middle, and decision at the bottom. Some teams add retention and advocacy after purchase. Each stage uses different content and measures a different conversion.

**What is the difference between a marketing funnel and a sales funnel?**

A marketing funnel covers how marketing attracts and converts an audience into qualified leads. A sales funnel covers how sales moves those leads through conversations to a closed deal. They connect at the lead hand-off.

**Is the marketing funnel still relevant for B2B?**

It is useful as a planning tool for content coverage and conversion measurement. It is less accurate as a description of behavior, since buying groups research in loops and often decide before contacting any vendor.
