[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Match rate Data & Enrichment # Match rate In short Match rate is the share of records in a list or database that a data provider or enrichment tool can successfully identify and return information for. If you send 1,000 contacts and the tool returns data for 700, the match rate is 70%. It measures coverage, not quality. A high match rate means the tool recognizes many of your records; it does not say whether the returned fields are correct, current, or complete. ## How to calculate match rate Divide matched records by total records submitted, then multiply by 100. Calculate it per field type, not only overall, because coverage varies a lot between company data, work emails, and phone numbers. * **Record match rate:** Share of rows where the tool found the person or company at all. * **Field fill rate:** Share of rows where a specific field, such as a work email or phone number, came back populated. * **Verified rate:** Share of returned values that pass a validity check such as email verification. --- ## What affects match rate ### Input quality Records with only a name and no domain match far less often than records with a domain or LinkedIn profile URL. Cleaner inputs raise match rates with any provider. ### Region and segment Coverage differs by country, company size, and industry. A tool strong in North American mid-market may match fewer small European firms. ### Matching logic Strict matching returns fewer but safer results. Loose matching returns more, with a higher risk of wrong matches. --- ## How to test a data source Run the same sample list through each provider you are considering. Say you take 500 records from your real target market. Compare the record match rate, the fill rate for the fields you need, and the verified rate. Then spot check a few dozen matches by hand to catch false positives. --- ## Common mistakes * **Treating match rate as accuracy:** A provider can match every record and still return stale titles. * **Testing on a friendly sample:** Use records from your real ICP, including hard segments, not only well-known brands. * **Comparing different definitions:** Providers may count a partial match as a match. Ask how each one defines it before comparing. * **Ignoring cost per match:** Compare what you pay for each usable result, not each attempted lookup. --- ## Match rate vs. lead-to-account matching Match rate is a coverage metric for data tools. Lead-to-account matching is the CRM process of linking people to accounts, and its own success can be reported as a match rate. --- ## Match rate FAQs **What is a good match rate for B2B data enrichment?** There is no universal number, because it depends on your input data, region, and target segment. Instead of chasing a benchmark, test several providers on the same sample from your own market and compare results for the fields you actually need. **How do you calculate match rate?** Divide the number of records a tool successfully identified by the total number of records you submitted, then multiply by 100. For example, 700 matches from 1,000 submitted records is a 70% match rate. **What is the difference between match rate and accuracy?** Match rate shows how many of your records a tool found. Accuracy shows whether the returned data is correct. A tool can match almost everything and still return outdated or wrong values, so check both on a sample. **How can you improve your match rate?** Start with cleaner inputs: add company domains, full names, and profile URLs, remove duplicates, and standardize country and company name formats. Then test whether a second data source fills the gaps the first leaves.
