# Middle of funnel (MOFU)

In short

Middle of funnel (MOFU) is the stage of the buyer journey where a prospect has recognized a problem and is actively evaluating ways to solve it. They are not yet comparing final vendors, but they are reading, asking peers, and forming opinions.

For GTM teams, MOFU is where interest turns into consideration. The goal is to show you understand the problem better than alternatives and to earn a conversation, not to push a demo too early.

## What happens at the middle of the funnel

Buyers at this stage have a name for their problem and a rough list of approaches. They want proof that an approach works for companies like theirs.

* **Researching:** Reading comparison guides, how-to content, and analyst-style overviews.
* **Self-qualifying:** Checking whether a solution fits their size, stack, and budget.
* **Involving others:** Bringing in colleagues who will influence the decision.

---

## MOFU content and tactics

* **Case studies:** Show a similar company with a similar problem and a clear outcome.
* **Webinars and workshops:** Let buyers see the method, not just hear claims.
* **Comparison and "how to choose" guides:** Help buyers set criteria, ideally criteria that fit your strengths honestly.
* **Email nurture:** A short sequence that sends the next most useful asset based on what the lead read.
* **Retargeting:** Reach known visitors with proof content instead of generic brand ads.

---

## How to measure MOFU

Top-of-funnel metrics like traffic do not tell you whether consideration is working. Track engagement depth and movement instead.

* **Repeat visits:** Accounts returning to solution and pricing-adjacent pages.
* **Content-to-meeting rate:** Share of engaged leads who book a conversation.
* **Stage progression:** Leads moving from engaged to marketing qualified.

---

## Example

Say a RevOps lead downloads a guide on cleaning CRM data. A good MOFU path sends a case study from a similar-sized company, then an invite to a working session on the process. A bad one sends a pricing email the next morning.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Gating everything:** Forms on every asset stall buyers who are still deciding whether to trust you.
* **Selling too soon:** Pitching the product before the buyer agrees on the problem.
* **One path for all:** Ignoring role and segment, so every lead gets the same nurture.

## Middle of funnel FAQs

**What is the middle of funnel (MOFU) in marketing?**

The middle of funnel is the stage where a prospect knows their problem and is evaluating possible solutions. Marketing focuses on education, proof, and comparison content that builds trust and moves the buyer toward a sales conversation.

**What is the difference between top, middle, and bottom of funnel?**

Top of funnel is awareness, where buyers discover a problem. Middle of funnel is consideration, where they compare approaches. Bottom of funnel is decision, where they choose a vendor. Each stage needs different content and a different call to action.

**What content works best for MOFU?**

Case studies, webinars, comparison guides, checklists, and product-led explainers work well. They help buyers judge whether a solution fits their situation. Content should show evidence and method rather than push a purchase.

**How do you measure MOFU performance?**

Look at engagement depth and progression, not traffic. Useful measures include repeat visits from the same account, content-to-meeting rate, nurture reply rates, and the share of engaged leads that become marketing qualified.
