[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Month-to-date RevOps & Pipeline # Month-to-date (MTD) In short Month-to-date (MTD) is the cumulative value of a metric from the first day of the current calendar month through today. It shows how far a team has come toward a monthly target while the month is still in progress. Sales and marketing teams use MTD for closed revenue, pipeline created, meetings booked, and spend. It answers a practical question: are we on pace? ## How MTD works MTD resets on the first day of each month and grows each day. On the 15th, MTD covers days 1 to 15. Say a team has a monthly goal of 40 meetings and has booked 18 by the 15th of a 30-day month. The goal pace at the halfway point is 20, so the team is slightly behind and can adjust now rather than at month end. --- ## How to use MTD well ### Compare with the goal pace Divide the monthly goal by the number of days or working days, then multiply by days elapsed. Compare MTD actuals with that figure. ### Compare with the same point last month Comparing MTD on the 12th with the full prior month is misleading. Compare it with the prior month through its 12th day, or use a like-for-like cut. ### Watch back-loaded months Many sales teams close a large share of deals at the end of the month. A low MTD mid-month can be normal for them. Learn your usual shape before reacting. --- ## Common MTD metrics for GTM teams * **Revenue MTD:** Closed-won bookings so far this month. * **Pipeline MTD:** New opportunity value created so far. * **Activity MTD:** Calls, emails, and meetings completed. * **Spend MTD:** Ad or program budget used against the monthly plan. --- ## MTD vs. related terms * **Quarter-to-date and year-to-date:** Same idea over a longer window, starting at the start of the quarter or year. * **Month-over-month:** Compares two periods against each other. MTD tracks one period in progress. --- ## Common mistakes * Comparing a partial month with a complete month. * Ignoring differences in working days between months. * Reading MTD without knowing the timing of data updates, since CRM records may lag. --- ## Month-to-date FAQs **What does month-to-date (MTD) mean?** Month-to-date is the total of a metric from the first day of the current month through today. For example, MTD revenue is all revenue closed since the 1st of this month. It resets at the start of each month. **How do you calculate MTD?** Add up the metric for every day from the first of the month through the current date. To judge progress, compare it with the monthly goal multiplied by the share of the month that has passed. **What is the difference between MTD and QTD?** MTD covers the current month from day one to today. QTD, or quarter-to-date, covers the current quarter from its first day to today. Both are running totals that reset at the start of their period. **Why is MTD useful for sales teams?** It shows whether the team is on pace for a monthly target while there is still time to act. Managers can adjust outreach, pipeline reviews, or deal focus before the month closes, instead of reporting a miss afterward.
