Market & Targeting

# Negative ICP

Also known as: anti-ICP, negative ideal customer profile, bad-fit customers, disqualification criteria

In short

A negative ICP is the opposite of an ideal customer profile: a list of traits that predict a poor-fit customer. These are accounts that look attractive on paper but tend to stall, churn, or drain support time.

Defining it protects pipeline quality. Reps spend less time on deals that were never going to close or stay.

## Why a negative ICP matters

Most teams only define who to target. Without exclusions, list building pulls in every account that matches the positive filters, including the ones that hurt you.

* **Cleaner pipeline:** Bad-fit deals never enter it, so forecasts get more reliable.
* **Lower churn:** You stop acquiring customers who were set up to leave.
* **Better rep focus:** Time goes to accounts that can actually succeed with your product.

## How to build a negative ICP

### Study churned and lost accounts

Look at customers who churned within the first year and deals lost for reasons of fit, not price. Group them by size, industry, stack, and use case.

### Find the repeating traits

Common examples: a company size below what your pricing supports, an industry with compliance needs you do not meet, or a missing integration your product depends on.

### Turn exclusions into filters

Apply them as exclusion rules in list building and lead routing, and add them to your ICP score as negative points.

---

## Negative ICP examples

* Companies under a minimum headcount where your product has no use case.
* Regions you cannot legally or operationally serve.
* Competitors and agencies that resell similar services.
* Accounts without the system your product integrates with.

## Negative ICP FAQs

**What is a negative ICP?**

A negative ICP is a description of the companies that are a poor fit for your product. They are the accounts likely to churn, stall in the sales cycle, or cost more to support than they pay, so you exclude them from targeting.

**How is a negative ICP different from an ICP?**

An ICP defines the accounts you want. A negative ICP defines the accounts you avoid. Using both gives you inclusion filters to find good fits and exclusion filters to keep bad fits out of your pipeline.

**Where does a negative ICP get used?**

It is used in list building as exclusion filters, in lead scoring as negative points, and in routing rules that send poor-fit leads to nurture instead of a sales rep.
