[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Objection handling Sales # Objection handling In short Objection handling is the skill of identifying, clarifying, and responding to a buyer's concerns so the conversation can continue. It is about understanding the real worry behind the words, not winning an argument. Objections are normal signals of engagement. A buyer who raises a concern is still thinking about the purchase, and how a rep responds often shapes trust more than the pitch did. ## A simple objection handling process ### 1. Listen fully Let the buyer finish. Interrupting signals defensiveness and may cut off the real reason. ### 2. Acknowledge Show you heard it: "That makes sense, a lot of teams worry about that." Acknowledging is not agreeing. ### 3. Clarify Ask a question to find the root. "Too expensive" can mean no budget, unclear value, or a cheaper alternative. ### 4. Respond Answer the specific concern with a fact, a customer example, or a change to the proposal. Keep it short. ### 5. Confirm Check the answer landed: "Does that address your concern?" Then agree on a next step. --- ## Common objection types * **Price:** The cost seems high relative to perceived value. * **Timing:** Priorities or budget cycles say not now. * **Authority:** The contact cannot decide alone. * **Need:** The buyer does not see the problem as urgent. * **Trust or risk:** Concerns about switching, security, or implementation. --- ## Example A buyer says, "We already use another tool." Instead of attacking it, the rep asks, "What do you like about it, and where does it fall short?" The answer reveals either a real gap to address or a signal that the deal is not worth pursuing. --- ## Common mistakes * **Arguing:** Pushing back on a feeling rarely changes it. * **Answering the wrong objection:** Skipping clarification leads to a polished reply to a problem the buyer does not have. * **Scripts without listening:** Canned rebuttals sound canned. * **Ignoring the pattern:** Repeated objections in the same stage often point to a pitch or qualification problem. --- ## Objection handling FAQs **What is objection handling?** Objection handling is the practice of listening to a buyer's concern, clarifying the real issue behind it, responding with relevant facts or proof, and confirming the answer worked. The aim is to keep a productive conversation going rather than to win an argument. **Which objections come up most in objection handling?** The most common objections involve price, timing, authority, need, and risk. Buyers say the cost is too high, that now is not the right time, that someone else decides, that the problem is not urgent, or that switching feels risky. **How do you handle a price objection?** First ask what the buyer is comparing the price to and what outcome they expect. Then tie the cost to the specific value they described, and consider adjusting scope or terms instead of discounting right away. Avoid defending the number before you understand the concern.
