# Outbound sales

In short

Outbound sales is a sales approach in which reps or SDRs start the conversation with prospects who have not asked to hear from them. Reps reach out by email, phone, LinkedIn, or direct mail to accounts chosen in advance.

The seller controls who is contacted and when. That makes outbound a good fit for teams with a clear target market, a high deal value, or too little inbound demand to reach their goals.

## How outbound sales works

A typical outbound motion runs in four steps. The team defines target accounts, finds the right contacts, sends sequenced outreach across channels, and books meetings for account executives.

* **Target list:** Built from your ideal customer profile, so reps only contact companies that fit.
* **Contact data:** Verified emails and phone numbers for the people who own the problem.
* **Sequences:** A planned series of touches over two to four weeks, mixing channels.
* **Handoff:** Interested prospects are qualified and passed to an AE.

## Outbound vs. inbound sales

The difference is who makes the first move. In inbound sales, the buyer finds you through content, search, or ads and asks for contact. In outbound, you approach the buyer first.

* **Outbound:** You choose the accounts. Results depend on list quality and message relevance.
* **Inbound:** The buyer chooses you. Volume depends on brand and content, and you cannot easily steer it toward one segment.

---

## A simple example

Say a company sells payroll software to mid-sized logistics firms. An SDR builds a list of 200 logistics companies with 100 to 500 employees, finds the head of finance at each, and runs a six-touch sequence that references a hiring surge or a new depot. Replies are qualified, and interested contacts get a meeting with an AE.

---

## Common outbound mistakes

* **Big, loose lists:** Contacting everyone wastes rep time and hurts sender reputation.
* **Generic messages:** Copy that could be sent to any company is easy to ignore.
* **No timing signal:** Reaching an account with no reason to talk now lowers reply rates.
* **Poor data:** Bounced emails and wrong titles stall the whole motion.

## Outbound sales FAQs

**What is outbound sales?**

Outbound sales is when a seller starts the conversation with a prospect who has not reached out first. Reps use email, phone, social messages, and other channels to contact accounts that match their target market, then qualify interest and book meetings.

**What is the difference between outbound sales and inbound sales?**

In outbound sales the seller contacts selected prospects first. In inbound sales the buyer makes the first move, usually after finding content, a website, or an ad. Outbound gives more control over targeting, while inbound depends on demand you attract.

**What are examples of outbound sales activities?**

Common outbound sales activities include cold calling, cold email sequences, LinkedIn outreach, direct mail, and attending events to approach target accounts. Each activity aims to start a conversation with a prospect who matches the ideal customer profile.

**When does outbound sales work best?**

Outbound sales works best when you have a well-defined target market, a deal value that justifies personal outreach, and buyers who are reachable but not actively searching. It also helps when inbound demand alone cannot fill the pipeline.
