# Partner program

In short

A partner program is a formal structure a company uses to recruit, manage, and reward outside organizations that help it sell, deliver, or promote its products. It defines who can join, what they get, what is expected, and how they are paid.

The program turns informal relationships into a repeatable motion. It gives partners clear terms and gives the vendor a way to scale revenue through others instead of only through its own team.

## Common partner types

* **Referral partners:** Introduce prospects for a fee or commission.
* **Resellers:** Buy or resell the product, often with their own margin.
* **Agencies and consultants:** Implement or advise, and recommend tools to clients.
* **Technology partners:** Build integrations that make both products more useful.
* **Affiliates:** Promote the product online for a commission.

---

## What a program includes

### Tiers and requirements

Levels such as registered, silver, and gold, with criteria like revenue or certifications.

### Benefits

Margins, leads, deal registration, training, marketing funds, and support.

### Rules of engagement

How deals are registered, how conflicts with direct sales are handled, and what brand use is allowed.

### Compensation

Commission, discount, or revenue-share structures that make selling worthwhile.

---

## How to launch one

* Define the goal, such as reaching a new region or segment.
* Pick the partner types that fit that goal.
* Set economics that work for both sides.
* Prepare onboarding and content before recruiting.
* Start with a small group, learn, then scale.

---

## Example

Say a security vendor wants more mid-market reach. It builds a program for regional IT service firms with two tiers, a margin on each deal, and a short certification. It recruits eight firms first, tracks who closes business, and expands the program once the terms prove workable.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Recruiting before enabling:** Signing partners with nothing to give them wastes both sides' time.
* **Unclear channel conflict rules:** Partners leave when they fear being undercut.
* **Too many tiers:** Complexity hides the path to growth.
* **No ownership:** Someone must run the program day to day.

## Partner program FAQs

**What is a partner program?**

A partner program is a structured offering through which a company recruits, rewards, and supports outside organizations such as resellers, agencies, and referral partners. It sets terms, benefits, tiers, and rules for how partners work with the vendor.

**What are the types of partner programs?**

Common types include referral, reseller, agency or consulting, technology or integration, and affiliate programs. Many companies run several at once, with different benefits and requirements for each partner type.

**How do you build a partner program from scratch?**

Set a goal, choose the partner types that serve it, design economics that work for both sides, prepare onboarding and content, and launch with a small group. Review results and refine before recruiting widely.

**How do you measure the success of a partner program?**

Track partner-sourced and partner-influenced pipeline and revenue, time to first deal, active partner rate, and partner retention. Compare cost of running the program with the revenue it brings in.
