# Persona-based marketing

Also known as: persona marketing

In short

Persona-based marketing is an approach where messaging, content, and channels are designed around specific buyer personas, which are research-based profiles of the roles that research, influence, and approve a purchase.

B2B deals involve several people with different goals. A finance leader, a technical evaluator, and an end user care about different outcomes, so one generic message reaches none of them well.

## How it works

You define a small set of personas, learn what each cares about, then adapt what you say and where you say it. The product stays the same. The angle changes.

* **Goals:** What the person is measured on.
* **Objections:** Why they might say no.
* **Information habits:** Where they read, and what proof they trust.
* **Role in the deal:** Champion, decision maker, evaluator, or blocker.

---

## Putting it into practice

### 1. Build personas from evidence

Use customer interviews, sales call notes, and closed-won deals. Avoid inventing traits that no one has verified.

### 2. Map content to persona and stage

Create a simple grid of persona by funnel stage and fill the most important gaps first.

### 3. Personalize outreach and ads

Use role-specific subject lines, landing pages, and ad copy. Segment email lists by role so each group gets relevant sends.

---

## Example

Say a team sells a reporting tool. For a sales leader the message is faster forecasting. For a RevOps manager it is cleaner data and fewer manual reports. For a security reviewer it is access controls and documentation. Same product, three entry points.

---

## Persona-based marketing vs ICP

An ideal customer profile defines which companies to target. Persona-based marketing speaks to the people inside those companies.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Too many personas:** Five to ten is hard to maintain. Start with two or three.
* **Stereotypes:** Demographics tell you less than goals and decisions.
* **Never updating:** Review personas against real deals each year.

## Persona-based marketing FAQs

**What is persona-based marketing?**

Persona-based marketing tailors messaging, content, and channels to specific buyer personas, which are profiles of the roles involved in a purchase. It recognizes that different decision makers have different goals and concerns.

**How is persona-based marketing different from account-based marketing?**

Persona-based marketing adapts messages to the roles of buyers. Account-based marketing focuses effort on a chosen list of target companies. They combine well: ABM picks the accounts, personas guide what you say to each person there.

**How many personas do you need for persona-based marketing?**

Most teams do well with two to four. Start with the roles that most influence your deals, such as the champion and the final approver, and add more only when you see real differences in how they buy.

**How do you build personas for persona-based marketing?**

Gather evidence from customer interviews, sales calls, and closed-won deals. Note each role’s goals, objections, and information sources, then validate the draft with sales and customers before using it in campaigns.
