# Personalized URL (pURL)

Also known as: personalized URLs, personalised URL

In short

A personalized URL (pURL) is a web address created for a single recipient, usually built from their name or company, such as a link ending in /acme or /jane-smith. It opens a page tailored to that person or account.

Because each link belongs to one recipient, a pURL also works as a tracking tool. A visit tells you who engaged, and it gives sales a reason to follow up while interest is fresh.

## How a personalized URL works

A pURL is usually generated in bulk from a list. Each row in the list gets its own link, and each link loads a page that pulls in details about that recipient.

* **Unique link:** Built from a name, company, or ID, either as a path or a subdomain.
* **Dynamic page:** The page swaps in the recipient name, logo, industry message, or a relevant case study.
* **Tracking:** Visits, time on page, and form fills are tied back to the recipient record in your CRM or marketing tool.

## Where GTM teams use pURLs

### Direct mail and events

A printed card or gift with a pURL or QR code sends the recipient to a page made for them. This connects offline touches to online behavior.

### Account-based campaigns

In account-based marketing, a pURL can open a page for one target account with a tailored message, relevant proof, and a direct meeting link.

### Outbound email

Reps can include a pURL in a sequence so the prospect lands on a page with their company context instead of a generic site.

---

## Example

Say a team picks 50 target accounts and mails each buying committee a card with a link such as example.com/acme. The page shows the Acme name, a case study from a similar company, and a booking calendar. When someone at Acme visits, the owning rep gets an alert and reaches out the same day.

---

## How to set one up

* **Start with a clean list:** Names, companies, and owners must be accurate, or the page will show the wrong details.
* **Pick a link pattern:** Keep it short and readable. Avoid long strings that look like spam when typed from print.
* **Build one flexible template:** Use merge fields for the name, company, and a few segment-based blocks.
* **Route visits to owners:** Send an alert to the rep or SDR so follow-up is quick.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Dirty data:** A misspelled name on a personalized page hurts more than a generic page would.
* **Personalization with no value:** Swapping only the name adds little. Add relevant content and a clear next step.
* **Privacy blind spots:** Tracking individuals needs a lawful basis and clear notice in many regions. This is not legal advice; check with your counsel.
* **No follow-up plan:** A visit alert is only useful if someone acts on it.

## Personalized URL FAQs

**What is a personalized URL (pURL) in marketing?**

A personalized URL is a web address made for one recipient, often including their name or company. It opens a page tailored to them and lets marketers see who visited, which helps sales time their follow-up.

**How do you create a personalized URL?**

Start with a clean contact or account list, generate a unique link for each row, and point every link at a dynamic landing page template that fills in details like name and company. Then connect visit tracking to your CRM.

**Are personalized URLs effective for direct mail?**

They can be, because they link a physical piece to measurable online behavior. Results depend on list quality, the relevance of the page, and fast follow-up. Test with a small batch and compare against a generic link.

**Are personalized URLs legal under GDPR?**

Tracking an identifiable person can count as processing personal data, so you generally need a lawful basis and clear notice. Requirements vary by region and use. This is general information, not legal advice; consult your counsel.
