[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Pipeline generation RevOps & Pipeline # Pipeline generation In short Pipeline generation is the work of creating new qualified sales opportunities. It includes every motion that turns target accounts into real deals: outbound outreach, inbound marketing, events, partner referrals, and customer expansion. It happens before pipeline management. Generation adds deals to the pipeline; management moves them through it. Many teams fail by managing a pipeline that was never filled enough. ## Main pipeline generation channels * **Outbound:** SDRs and AEs contact target accounts by email, phone, and social. * **Inbound:** Content, search, and paid campaigns bring people to request a demo. * **Events:** Webinars and field events that produce meetings. * **Partners and referrals:** Introductions from partners, agencies, and happy customers. * **Expansion:** New use cases and teams inside existing customers. --- ## How to build a pipeline generation plan ### Start from the target Work backward from the revenue goal using average deal size and win rate to find how many opportunities you need. ### Pick accounts first Define your ideal customer profile and target account list so effort goes to companies likely to buy. ### Assign channels and owners Give each source a number and an owner. Say a team needs 40 opportunities; it might plan 20 outbound, 15 inbound, and 5 partner. ### Review weekly Track meetings booked, opportunities created, and conversion by source, then shift effort to what works. --- ## Pipeline generation vs. lead generation Lead generation produces contacts. Pipeline generation produces qualified opportunities with a plausible path to revenue. A large lead count can still mean an empty pipeline. --- ## Common mistakes * **Counting leads as pipeline:** Unqualified names are not deals. * **One channel:** Relying on a single source makes results fragile. * **Ignoring timing:** Contacting accounts with no buying signal wastes effort. * **No sales and marketing agreement:** Different definitions of "qualified" create disputes. --- ## Pipeline generation FAQs **What is pipeline generation?** Pipeline generation is the process of creating new qualified sales opportunities through outbound prospecting, inbound marketing, events, partnerships, and customer expansion.
