# Pipeline review

In short

A pipeline review is a structured meeting, usually weekly, where a manager and rep go through open opportunities to check progress, risk, and next steps. The goal is to decide what to do about the deals, not just to report on them.

It is different from a forecast call, which commits numbers for the period. A pipeline review feeds the forecast, but its focus is deal action and coaching.

## What a good pipeline review covers

* **Deal progress:** What changed since last week?
* **Risks:** Single-threaded deals, no budget owner, slipping dates.
* **Next steps:** What is the dated action, and who owns it?
* **Pipeline gaps:** Is there enough early-stage pipeline for next quarter?
* **Help needed:** Where does the rep need an executive, a reference, or a pricing decision?

---

## How to run one

### Prepare from clean data

Reps update their deals beforehand. Reviews on stale data waste time and reward storytelling.

### Pick a focus

Review the top deals by value and any deal that changed stage or date. You do not need to cover every record.

### Ask the same questions each time

Why will the buyer act? Who else is involved? What happens next? Consistency makes risk visible.

### Write down actions

End with a short list of owners and dates and check them next week.

---

## Example

Say a manager reviews a large deal in negotiation. The rep has spoken only with a project lead. The manager asks the rep to arrange a call with finance before the end of the week and to prepare a mutual close plan. The review produced a concrete action.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Status reading:** If the meeting is each rep reading their list, replace it with inspection and coaching.
* **Too many deals:** Long reviews dilute attention from deals that matter.
* **No follow-up:** Actions that nobody checks teach reps the meeting does not matter.
* **Blame tone:** Reps hide risk if surfacing it is punished.

## Pipeline review FAQs

**What is a pipeline review?**

A pipeline review is a recurring meeting, typically weekly, where managers and reps examine open deals, discuss risks, and agree on next actions. It aims to move opportunities forward, coach reps, and keep forecasts grounded in real deal progress.

**How do you run a good sales pipeline review?**

Have reps update records beforehand, focus on the largest and most changed deals, ask the same risk questions each time, and finish with written actions, owners, and dates. Follow up on those actions at the next review.

**What is the difference between a pipeline review and a forecast call?**

A pipeline review inspects individual deals to decide actions and coach reps. A forecast call commits a number for the period based on those deals. The review informs the forecast but focuses on moving opportunities, not predicting totals.
