[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Pipeline-to-quota ratio RevOps & Pipeline # Pipeline-to-quota ratio In short Pipeline-to-quota ratio is the total value of open opportunities divided by the sales quota for the same period. A team with $3 million of pipeline against a $1 million quota has a ratio of 3 to 1, often written as 3x. The ratio is a forward-looking health check. It tells you early in a quarter whether you need to generate more pipeline, long before the miss shows up in closed revenue. ## How to calculate it Divide qualified open pipeline by the quota for the period you are measuring. Measure it per rep, per team, or company-wide, and keep the period and the stage definition consistent. * **Formula:** Open qualified pipeline value divided by remaining quota. * **Example:** Say a team has $1.2 million of remaining quota and $3.6 million of open pipeline expected to close this quarter. The ratio is 3x. --- ## What ratio do you need? The right number depends on your win rate. Because only part of the pipeline closes, the required ratio is roughly one divided by your win rate on pipeline of that stage. Say your team wins about one in four qualified opportunities. You need about 4x coverage to reach quota on average. If you win one in three, about 3x is enough. Calculate it from your own closed history instead of copying a number from another company. --- ## How to use it in practice ### Inspect it by stage and age A 4x ratio built from stale or early-stage deals is weaker than 3x made of late-stage deals. Split the ratio by stage and by expected close date. ### Use it to set pipeline generation targets Work backward from quota and win rate to the pipeline marketing and SDRs must create each month. This turns a revenue goal into a lead and meeting target. ### Review it weekly Track the ratio against the days remaining in the period. A ratio that is fine in week two can be a problem in week ten, since new pipeline created late rarely closes in time. --- ## Common mistakes * **Counting unqualified pipeline:** Inflated stages make the ratio look healthy while forecasts miss. * **Using one ratio for every segment:** Enterprise and SMB deals have different win rates, so they need different targets. * **Ignoring timing:** Pipeline that closes next quarter does not protect this quarter. * **Treating it as a forecast:** The ratio shows risk, not an expected result. Pair it with stage-weighted forecasting. --- ## Pipeline-to-quota ratio vs. pipeline coverage The two terms are used almost interchangeably. Pipeline coverage is the broader idea of having enough pipeline, while pipeline-to-quota ratio is the specific number you calculate to express it. --- ## Pipeline-to-quota ratio FAQs **What is a good pipeline-to-quota ratio?** It depends on your win rate. Divide one by the share of qualified opportunities you win. A team that wins one in four needs roughly 4x pipeline against quota, while a team that wins one in three needs about 3x. **How do you calculate pipeline-to-quota ratio?** Divide the value of qualified open pipeline expected to close in a period by the quota for that same period. For example, $3 million of pipeline against a $1 million quota gives a pipeline-to-quota ratio of 3x. **Is pipeline-to-quota ratio the same as pipeline coverage?** Mostly yes. Pipeline coverage is the general concept of having enough opportunities to reach target, and the pipeline-to-quota ratio is the number used to measure it. Teams often use the two names interchangeably. **Why does pipeline-to-quota ratio matter for sales forecasting?** It gives an early warning. If the ratio is below what your win rate requires, the team will probably miss quota unless it adds pipeline or improves conversion, and that shows up weeks before closed revenue does.
