[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Pipeline velocity RevOps & Pipeline # Pipeline velocity In short Pipeline velocity is a metric that estimates how much revenue your pipeline produces per unit of time. It combines four inputs: number of qualified opportunities, average deal size, win rate, and sales cycle length. The common formula is: (opportunities x average deal size x win rate) / sales cycle length. The result is expected revenue per day, week, or month, depending on the unit used for the cycle. ## A worked example Say a team has 50 open opportunities, an average deal size of 20,000, a 25 percent win rate, and a 100-day sales cycle. Velocity is (50 x 20,000 x 0.25) / 100 = 2,500 per day. These numbers are illustrative only. --- ## The four levers Because velocity has four inputs, each one is a lever you can pull. * **More opportunities:** Increase pipeline generation or target better accounts. * **Larger deals:** Sell to bigger accounts, add packages, or expand scope. * **Higher win rate:** Improve qualification, discovery, and multi-threading. * **Shorter cycle:** Remove friction such as slow legal review, late stakeholder involvement, and unclear next steps. --- ## How to use pipeline velocity ### Track it over time Compare quarter to quarter and by segment, so you see which lever moved. ### Find the weakest input If win rate is steady but cycles grow longer, look at stage-level time and where deals stall. ### Compare segments Mid-market and enterprise often have very different velocity. Do not average them together. --- ## Velocity vs. pipeline coverage Coverage asks whether you have enough pipeline value for the target. Velocity asks how fast that pipeline converts into revenue. Both are needed. --- ## Common mistakes * **Mixing segments:** Blended averages hide the real picture. * **Unqualified opportunities:** Counting weak deals inflates the first input. * **Using the wrong units:** Keep the cycle and the period consistent. * **Optimizing one lever:** Pushing win rate down in exchange for volume can lower the result. --- ## Pipeline velocity FAQs **What is pipeline velocity?** Pipeline velocity is a sales metric that estimates how quickly your pipeline converts into revenue. It uses the number of opportunities, average deal size, win rate, and sales cycle length to give expected revenue per unit of time. **What is the pipeline velocity formula?** Pipeline velocity equals the number of qualified opportunities multiplied by average deal size and win rate, divided by sales cycle length. The result is expected revenue per day, week, or month depending on the unit used for the cycle. **How do you increase pipeline velocity?** Pull one of four levers: create more qualified opportunities, raise average deal size, improve win rate through better qualification and discovery, or shorten the sales cycle by removing delays such as late stakeholder involvement and slow approvals.
