# Precision targeting

In short

Precision targeting is the practice of directing sales and marketing effort at a tightly defined group of accounts and contacts that closely match the ideal customer, and ignoring the rest. It trades reach for relevance.

It is the opposite of spray and pray, where large volumes of generic messages go to loosely qualified lists. The aim is a higher share of conversations with companies that can actually buy.

## What precision targeting relies on

* **A clear ICP:** Specific filters, including exclusions, not a general description.
* **Good data:** Accurate firmographic, technographic, and contact data, or the targeting is only an illusion of precision.
* **Timing signals:** Events such as hiring or funding that suggest a company is ready to buy.
* **Role clarity:** Knowing which person to contact in each account.

---

## How to do it

### 1. Tighten the filters

Add the traits that separate winners from losers, and add disqualifiers. Say a list of 10,000 drops to 2,000 after you add a tech stack requirement. That is the point.

### 2. Rank within the list

Use a fit score and timing signals so reps start with the best accounts.

### 3. Tailor the message

Reference something real about the company or role. A precise list with a generic email wastes the work.

### 4. Measure and adjust

Compare reply and meeting rates by filter. Keep filters that improve results and drop those that do not.

---

## Where it applies

* **Outbound:** Smaller, better lists and tailored sequences.
* **Paid media:** Account-based audiences instead of broad interest targeting.
* **Events and content:** Invite or target only relevant accounts.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Narrowing on weak data:** If fields are outdated, tight filters exclude good accounts.
* **Over-narrowing:** A list too small cannot sustain pipeline. Check the account count.
* **Ignoring the message:** Targeting alone does not create relevance.

## Precision targeting FAQs

**What is precision targeting in B2B?**

Precision targeting means focusing sales and marketing effort on a tightly defined group of accounts and contacts that closely match your ideal customer. It prioritizes relevance over volume and relies on specific filters, accurate data, and timing signals.

**How do you do precision targeting?**

Define a specific ICP with exclusions, build lists from accurate company data, rank accounts by fit and timing signals, and tailor the message to each role. Then compare results by filter and keep only those that improve outcomes.

**What is the difference between precision targeting and spray and pray?**

Spray and pray sends generic messages to large, loosely qualified lists, hoping a small share responds. Precision targeting limits outreach to accounts that closely fit the ICP and tailors messages, producing fewer but more relevant conversations.

**Can targeting be too narrow?**

Yes. If filters leave too few accounts, you may not generate enough pipeline, and bad data can exclude good fits. Check the count of matching accounts against your goal and loosen filters that do not improve results.
