[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Programmatic ABM ABM # Programmatic ABM Also known as: programmatic account-based marketing In short Programmatic ABM is an account-based approach that targets a large set of accounts, often hundreds or more, with standardized campaigns tailored to a segment rather than to each individual company. Templates, data, and automation do most of the repeatable work. It sits between one-to-one ABM, where each account gets a bespoke plan, and traditional lead generation, where the target is a broad audience. It trades depth of personalization for reach and efficiency while keeping the focus on named accounts. ## How programmatic ABM works The core idea is to build a play once and run it across many similar accounts. * **Segment:** Group accounts by shared traits such as industry, size, tech stack, or a trigger event. * **Template:** Create messaging, ads, and sequences for each segment, with fields that fill in company-specific details. * **Automate:** Use your marketing and sales tools to launch the plays, route replies, and alert reps when accounts engage. * **Measure:** Track engagement and pipeline by segment, then adjust the plays that underperform. --- ## Programmatic ABM vs. other ABM tiers * **One-to-one ABM:** A handful of strategic accounts with fully custom research, content, and outreach. * **One-to-few ABM:** Small clusters of similar accounts with semi-custom campaigns. * **Programmatic ABM (one-to-many):** Large account lists with templated, automated plays. The one-to-many tier is the same idea under another name. --- ## How to start ### 1. Build a clean target account list Use your ideal customer profile to select accounts, then check that firmographic and contact data is complete. Bad data breaks automation quickly. ### 2. Pick two or three segments Start small. Each segment should share a problem you can name in one sentence. ### 3. Align sales and marketing on the play Agree on which signals trigger outreach, who follows up, and how fast. A play that marketing runs and sales ignores produces no pipeline. ### 4. Review and iterate Look at each segment after a full cycle. Retire weak plays and promote the strong ones into more segments. --- ## Example Say a team sells to logistics companies. It builds a segment of mid-sized freight firms that recently hired a new operations leader. One play combines a targeted ad, a three-step email sequence, and a task for the rep when a contact visits the pricing page. The same play then runs across every account in the segment. --- ## Common mistakes * Calling any mass email "programmatic ABM" without a defined account list. * Segments that are too broad, so the messaging fits no one. * Automating before the play has been proven by hand on a few accounts. * Measuring clicks and leads instead of account engagement and pipeline. --- ## Programmatic ABM FAQs **What is programmatic ABM?** Programmatic ABM is account-based marketing run at scale. Instead of building custom campaigns for each company, a team groups many target accounts into segments and runs repeatable, mostly automated plays tailored to each segment, while still focusing on a defined list of accounts. **What is the difference between programmatic ABM and one-to-one ABM?** One-to-one ABM gives a few strategic accounts fully custom research, content, and outreach. Programmatic ABM covers a much larger list with templated plays per segment. The first maximizes personalization for each account; the second maximizes reach and efficiency across many accounts. **How many accounts do you need for programmatic ABM?** There is no fixed number, but programmatic ABM suits lists large enough that custom work per account is not practical, commonly in the hundreds or more. If you only have a dozen target accounts, a one-to-one or one-to-few approach usually fits better. **What tools does programmatic ABM need?** At minimum you need a CRM, a source of accurate account and contact data, and a way to run campaigns such as email sequences and ads. Many teams add intent or engagement signals to trigger outreach. The process and segmentation matter more than any specific tool.
