[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Quarter-over-quarter RevOps & Pipeline # Quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) In short Quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) is a comparison of a metric in one quarter against the same metric in the previous quarter. The usual formula is (current quarter minus prior quarter) divided by prior quarter, shown as a percentage. GTM teams use QoQ to see whether pipeline, bookings, or lead volume is speeding up or slowing down. It is a short-term momentum check, unlike year-over-year, which compares the same quarter across two years. ## How to calculate QoQ growth Take the metric for the current quarter, subtract the prior quarter, and divide by the prior quarter. Multiply by 100 for a percentage. Say a team created 800,000 in new pipeline in Q1 and 920,000 in Q2. The change is 120,000, so QoQ pipeline growth is 15 percent. This is an example, not a benchmark. --- ## Where GTM teams use QoQ * **Pipeline created:** Shows whether prospecting and marketing output is climbing or fading. * **Bookings and revenue:** Tracks momentum between board or leadership reviews. * **Funnel rates:** Compares MQL-to-SQL or win rate between quarters to catch a change early. * **Activity volume:** Checks whether meetings booked or outbound touches moved with headcount. --- ## QoQ vs. year-over-year QoQ is sensitive and quick to react, but it picks up seasonality. A business whose fourth quarter is always strong will look like it slows every first quarter. Year-over-year compares like with like and removes that effect, so use QoQ for momentum and YoY for the underlying trend. --- ## Common QoQ mistakes * **Ignoring seasonality:** A normal summer dip is not a decline in performance. * **Small bases:** A jump from 2 to 4 deals is 100 percent growth but tells you little. * **Mismatched periods:** Quarters with different numbers of selling days or a changed fiscal calendar distort the comparison. * **One metric only:** Pair growth with absolute numbers so a percentage never hides the real size. --- ## Quarter-over-quarter FAQs **What does quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) mean?** Quarter-over-quarter means comparing a metric in one quarter with the quarter right before it. It is usually shown as a percentage change and used to judge short-term momentum in revenue, pipeline, or other business metrics. **How do you calculate QoQ growth?** Subtract the previous quarter value from the current quarter value, divide the result by the previous quarter value, and multiply by 100. A positive result means growth, and a negative result means the metric fell. **Is QoQ better than YoY for sales reporting?** Neither is better; they answer different questions. QoQ shows recent momentum but is distorted by seasonality, while YoY compares the same quarter across years and gives a cleaner view of the long-term trend. Most teams report both. **Why does QoQ growth look volatile for sales teams?** Sales results depend on seasonal buying, deal timing, and small numbers of large deals. A single big deal landing a week earlier or later can swing QoQ results, so smoothing with trailing averages helps.
