# Quarter-to-date (QTD)

In short

Quarter-to-date (QTD) is the total of a metric from the first day of the current fiscal quarter through today. It answers "how far into the target are we right now?"

Sales and RevOps teams use QTD numbers in weekly forecast calls and pipeline reviews. Because the quarter is not finished, a QTD figure only makes sense next to a target or the same point in a prior quarter.

## What QTD measures

QTD covers a window that starts at the beginning of the fiscal quarter and ends today. Common QTD metrics include closed-won revenue, new pipeline created, meetings held, and opportunities advanced.

Because it relies on the fiscal calendar, QTD depends on when your company starts its quarters, which may not match the calendar year.

---

## How to use QTD in sales reviews

* **Attainment:** Divide QTD closed-won by the quarterly quota to see percent attained.
* **Pacing:** Compare QTD with the same day of the prior quarter. Say a team had closed 40 percent of quota by week 8 last quarter and has 30 percent now; that gap is a signal to inspect.
* **Coverage:** Check that open pipeline still covers the remaining quota.
* **Run rate:** Project the quarter by dividing QTD by days elapsed and multiplying by total days, with caution.

---

## QTD vs. other time-to-date views

Month-to-date resets every month and suits activity metrics. Year-to-date accumulates over the fiscal year. QTD sits in the middle and matches how quotas and commissions are usually set.

---

## Common QTD mistakes

* **Linear assumption:** Deals often close late in the quarter, so a straight-line projection from QTD usually underestimates.
* **Wrong calendar:** Using calendar quarters when the company uses fiscal quarters shifts every number.
* **No comparison point:** A QTD total with no target or prior-period benchmark is hard to read.
* **Stale data:** Unlogged deals in the CRM make QTD look worse than reality.

## Quarter-to-date FAQs

**What does quarter-to-date (QTD) mean?**

Quarter-to-date means the cumulative result of a metric from the start of the current fiscal quarter until today. Sales teams use it to see how much of a quarterly target has already been achieved.

**How do you calculate QTD in sales?**

Add up the metric, such as closed-won revenue, for every day from the first day of the fiscal quarter through today. To see attainment, divide that total by the quarterly quota and multiply by 100.

**What is the difference between QTD and YTD?**

QTD covers only the current quarter, from its first day to today. YTD covers the whole fiscal year from its first day to today. QTD tracks quarterly quotas, while YTD shows annual progress.

**Can you forecast a full quarter from QTD numbers?**

Only roughly. Many deals close in the final weeks of a quarter, so scaling QTD in a straight line often understates results. Compare against the same point in earlier quarters and your open pipeline for a better estimate.
