[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Renewal Sales # Renewal In short A renewal is the extension of an existing customer contract or subscription for a further term. In B2B software it is the moment a customer decides to keep paying, usually at the end of a one-year or multi-year agreement. Renewals protect recurring revenue and often carry the chance to expand. Because keeping a customer is typically cheaper than winning a new one, teams plan renewals well ahead of the end date. ## Types of renewal * **Auto-renewal:** The contract continues unless the customer cancels within a notice window. * **Manual renewal:** A rep or customer success manager must negotiate and get a new signature. * **Flat renewal:** Same product and price for another term. * **Expansion renewal:** Renewal that adds seats, modules, or usage. --- ## How to run a renewal ### Start early Many teams begin 90 to 120 days before the end date, longer for large or complex accounts. This leaves time for budget cycles and legal review. ### Review value delivered Show outcomes against the goals set at purchase. A renewal conversation with proof is easier than one built on discounts. ### Map the stakeholders Confirm the champion, the budget owner, and procurement are still the same people. A departed champion is a common early warning. ### Handle paper and pricing Prepare the quote and order form and agree internally how much pricing flexibility exists. --- ## Who owns renewals In some companies the account manager or customer success manager owns renewal and the AE owns new business. In others a dedicated renewals team handles it. Whichever model you use, name one owner per account so nothing slips. --- ## Common mistakes * **Waiting for the notice:** Starting a month out leaves no room to fix problems. * **Discount first:** Leading with price teaches buyers to wait for a cut. * **Single-threaded accounts:** Relying on one contact makes churn unpredictable. * **Ignoring usage:** Low adoption in the months before renewal usually predicts trouble. --- ## Renewal vs. upselling A renewal keeps the customer; upselling grows the deal. Teams often combine them, but the renewal should not depend on the upsell. --- ## Renewal FAQs **What is a renewal in sales?** A renewal is when an existing customer extends a contract or subscription for another term. It keeps recurring revenue in place and is often the point where teams also propose additional seats, features, or longer commitments. **When should you start the renewal process?** Many teams start 90 to 120 days before the contract end date, and earlier for large or complex accounts. That window leaves time for value reviews, budget approval, legal review, and any pricing discussion. **What is the difference between auto-renewal and manual renewal?** Auto-renewal continues the contract automatically unless the customer cancels within a notice period. Manual renewal requires a fresh agreement or signature each term, so it takes more rep effort and carries more risk of lapse. **Who is responsible for renewals, sales or customer success?** It depends on the company. Some give renewals to account managers or customer success, some to a dedicated renewals team, and others to the original AE. What matters is that each account has one named owner.
