# Revenue churn

In short

Revenue churn is the percentage of recurring revenue a company loses in a period because customers cancel or downgrade. It is measured in money, not customer count.

Revenue churn matters because losing one large account hurts far more than losing several small ones. It shows how much of your revenue base leaks away before any growth is counted.

## How to calculate revenue churn

Divide the recurring revenue lost in the period by the recurring revenue at the start of the period.

### Gross revenue churn

Counts only losses: cancellations plus downgrades. It cannot go below zero.

### Net revenue churn

Subtracts expansion revenue, such as upgrades and added seats, from the losses. It can be negative, which means existing customers grew more than others left.

### Example

Say a company starts a month with 100,000 in monthly recurring revenue. Customers cancel 3,000 and downgrade 2,000, so gross revenue churn is 5 percent. Existing customers also add 4,000 in upgrades, so net revenue churn is 1 percent.

## Revenue churn vs. logo churn

Logo churn counts lost customers. Revenue churn counts lost money. A company can have low logo churn and high revenue churn if its biggest accounts leave or shrink. Track both.

---

## Why revenue churn happens

* **Poor onboarding:** Customers never reach value and cancel at renewal.
* **Weak fit:** Accounts outside your ideal customer profile leave faster.
* **Price or budget pressure:** Customers downgrade seats or tiers.
* **Champion loss:** The person who bought the product leaves and nobody replaces them.

---

## How to reduce it

* **Segment churn:** Break it down by plan, size, industry, and acquisition source to find where it concentrates.
* **Use health scores:** Flag accounts with falling usage before renewal.
* **Fix targeting:** If bad-fit customers churn most, tighten the ICP in prospecting.

## Revenue churn FAQs

**What is revenue churn?**

Revenue churn is the percentage of recurring revenue lost during a period because customers cancel or downgrade. It is calculated against the recurring revenue at the start of the period and reflects the money lost, not just the number of customers.

**How do you calculate revenue churn?**

Add up recurring revenue lost to cancellations and downgrades in the period, then divide by recurring revenue at the start of the period and multiply by 100. For net revenue churn, subtract expansion revenue from the losses first.

**What is the difference between revenue churn and customer churn?**

Customer churn counts how many customers leave, while revenue churn measures how much recurring revenue is lost. The two diverge when customers differ in size. Losing a few large accounts can mean high revenue churn despite low customer churn.

**Can revenue churn be negative?**

Net revenue churn can be negative when expansion revenue from upgrades, added seats, and higher usage exceeds revenue lost to cancellations and downgrades. This is often called negative churn and means existing customers are growing the base on their own.
