[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Revenue motion GTM Strategy & SaaS Metrics # Revenue motion In short A revenue motion is the repeatable way a company finds, wins, and grows customers. It describes who does the work, which channels bring buyers in, and how a deal moves from first contact to renewal and expansion. Common motions include sales-led, product-led, partner-led, and marketing-led. Many companies run more than one, such as self-serve for small customers and a sales team for large ones. Choosing the motion decides how you hire, price, and measure. ## Common revenue motions * **Sales-led:** Reps drive pipeline and close deals, usually with higher prices and longer cycles. * **Product-led:** The product itself drives signup, activation, and upgrade, often with self-serve buying. * **Partner-led:** Resellers, agencies, or integrators bring in and close business. * **Marketing-led:** Content and campaigns generate demand that is handed to sales or converts directly. * **Hybrid:** A blend, such as a free product with sales assistance for larger accounts. --- ## What defines a motion ### Buyer and deal size Small, quick deals suit self-serve. Large, complex deals usually need people. ### Sales cycle The length of the cycle decides the amount of human effort that is affordable. ### Team and process Roles, handoffs, and tools differ between motions. ### Metrics A product-led motion tracks activation and conversion, while a sales-led one tracks pipeline coverage and win rate. --- ## How to choose Start from your customer. Look at how they prefer to buy, what a customer is worth, and how complex the product is. Test one motion on a segment before building a full team around it, and avoid mixing motions in one segment without clear rules about who owns which accounts. --- ## Example Say a company sells a workflow tool. Teams under 20 seats sign up and pay online. Accounts above that size are routed to reps once usage hits a set level. This is a hybrid motion, with a rule that decides when a self-serve account becomes a sales-assisted one. --- ## Common mistakes * **Running two motions on the same accounts:** Reps and the product compete for the buyer. * **Copying another company's motion:** Their price, buyer, and product may differ. * **No fit between motion and price:** A low price cannot fund a field sales team. * **Ignoring expansion:** The motion should cover renewal and growth, not only the first sale. --- ## Revenue motion FAQs **What is a revenue motion?** A revenue motion is the repeatable way a company finds, wins, and grows customers. The right choice depends on the buyer, deal size, sales cycle, and product complexity. **How do you choose the right revenue motion?** Look at how customers prefer to buy, how much a customer is worth, and how complex the product is. Test one motion on a segment first, then build team, process, and metrics around what works. **What is the difference between a revenue motion and a sales process?** A sales process is the set of steps a rep follows to close a deal. A revenue motion is broader: it covers how the company attracts, converts, and expands customers across teams and channels, including self-serve and partners.
