# Reverse ETL

Also known as: reverse ETL tools

In short

Reverse ETL is the process of moving data out of a data warehouse and into the business tools where teams work, such as a CRM, marketing automation platform, ad network, or sales engagement tool. It is called "reverse" because classic ETL (extract, transform, load) moves data from those tools into the warehouse.

For GTM teams, it turns warehouse tables, such as product usage, account scores, or enriched firmographics, into fields and audiences that reps and marketers can use without writing SQL.

## How reverse ETL works

A reverse ETL job reads a table or query result from the warehouse, maps its columns to fields in a destination, and writes the changes on a schedule or trigger.

* **Source:** A model or table in the warehouse, such as "accounts with product usage and fit score."
* **Mapping:** Each column is matched to a destination field, for example score to a custom account field in the CRM.
* **Sync:** Only new or changed rows are pushed, matched on a stable key like account ID or domain.

---

## Reverse ETL vs. ETL and native integrations

* **ETL or ELT:** Moves raw data from tools into the warehouse for analysis.
* **Reverse ETL:** Sends modeled warehouse data back to tools for action.
* **Native integration:** A point-to-point connector between two tools. It is faster to set up but usually cannot use warehouse logic that combines many sources.

---

## GTM use cases

* **Product-led sales:** Push usage signals, such as invited teammates, to the CRM so reps can reach out to the right accounts.
* **Lead and account scoring:** Compute scores in the warehouse from many sources and write them to the CRM.
* **Audience sync:** Send a suppression or lookalike audience to ad platforms.
* **Enrichment sync:** Write cleaned and enriched company data back into the CRM.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Overwriting rep-entered data:** Decide which system owns each field before syncing, or the warehouse will overwrite manual updates.
* **No stable key:** Syncing on email or company name creates duplicates. Match on an ID or domain.
* **Syncing everything:** Push only the fields people use. Extra fields clutter the CRM and slow syncs.
* **Skipping monitoring:** Alert on failed or empty syncs, or reps work from stale data without knowing.

## Reverse ETL FAQs

**What is reverse ETL?**

Reverse ETL moves data from a data warehouse into operational tools such as a CRM, ad platform, or email tool. It lets sales and marketing teams use modeled data, like account scores or usage metrics, directly inside the systems they already work in.

**What is the difference between ETL and reverse ETL?**

ETL extracts data from business tools, transforms it, and loads it into a warehouse for analysis. Reverse ETL goes the other direction: it takes data that has been modeled in the warehouse and writes it back into the tools where people act on it.

**Why do GTM teams use reverse ETL?**

Warehouse data often holds the best view of an account, combining product usage, billing, and enrichment. Reverse ETL puts those insights into the CRM or ad tools so reps and marketers can prioritize and personalize without asking an analyst.

**Do you need a data warehouse to use reverse ETL?**

Yes. Reverse ETL reads from a warehouse or similar central data store, so you need one with well-modeled tables first. Without that foundation, a direct integration between your tools is usually the simpler way to share data.
