# Reverse IP lookup

In short

Reverse IP lookup is a method that matches a visitor’s IP address to the organization that registered or uses that address. In B2B marketing it turns anonymous traffic into a list of companies that visited your site.

It is a company-level technique. It does not identify the individual, and it works best when the visitor is on an office network with an IP tied to a business.

## How reverse IP lookup works

When someone loads your page, their IP address is visible to your server. A lookup service compares it with databases of IP ranges and ownership records, then returns a probable company name and often firmographic details.

* **Office networks:** Strong matches, since the IP belongs to the business.
* **Remote workers:** Weak matches. A home or mobile IP usually points to an internet provider, not an employer.
* **VPNs and proxies:** May show the VPN provider or a different location.
* **Shared or cloud IPs:** Can resolve to a hosting company rather than the visitor’s employer.

---

## What it is good for

* **Account-level intent:** See which target accounts visit pricing, security, or comparison pages.
* **Sales alerts:** Notify the account owner when a named account returns.
* **Ad and ABM targeting:** Build audiences from companies that engaged.
* **Content insight:** See which industries read which pages.

---

## Limits you should plan for

Coverage is partial, and accuracy differs by provider and traffic mix. Hybrid work has reduced how many visitors sit on a corporate IP. Because an IP is personal data under some laws, such as GDPR, disclose it in your privacy policy and check requirements for your regions. This is general information, not legal advice.

---

## Example

Say a team sees that three people from one target account visited the pricing and integrations pages in one week. The tool resolves the IP to that company. The rep checks fit, finds the likely buyer in the CRM, and sends a note about integrations, instead of waiting for a form fill that may never come.

---

## Reverse IP lookup vs. person-level identification

Reverse IP lookup names the company. Person-level identification tries to name the individual. Many teams use the first for coverage and the second only where consent allows.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Treating the match as certain:** Always allow for wrong or generic matches.
* **Alerting on every visit:** Filter out bots, job seekers, and existing customers.
* **Skipping fit:** A visit from a poor-fit company is not a lead.
* **Ignoring privacy:** Tracking needs notice and a lawful basis.

## Reverse IP lookup FAQs

**What is reverse IP lookup?**

Reverse IP lookup matches a website visitor’s IP address to the company that owns or uses it. B2B teams use it to see which organizations visit their site, even when visitors never fill out a form or share contact details.

**How accurate is reverse IP lookup for B2B?**

Accuracy varies. It works well for visitors on office networks and poorly for remote workers, mobile users, and VPNs. Coverage differs by provider, so test it against traffic where you already know who visited before relying on it.

**Can reverse IP lookup identify a specific person?**

No. It identifies the probable company, not the individual. To find the person you need other data, such as form fills, email clicks, or a separate identification method that has appropriate consent.

**Is reverse IP lookup GDPR compliant?**

It can be, but IP addresses count as personal data under GDPR, so you need a lawful basis, clear disclosure in your privacy policy, and a way to honor opt-outs. Requirements vary by region. This is general information, not legal advice.
