# Sales demo

In short

A sales demo is a guided presentation of a product that shows a prospect how it would solve their specific problem. It can be live or recorded, one-to-one or for a group, and usually follows a discovery conversation.

A good demo is not a feature tour. It connects what the buyer told you in discovery to the few capabilities that matter, so they can picture using the product in their own work.

## How to run a strong demo

### Recap discovery first

Restate the problems, goals, and success criteria you heard. Confirm them before showing anything.

### Start with the outcome

Show the end result the buyer wants, then work back to how the product gets there.

### Show only what matters

Pick two or three workflows tied to their pain. Skip features they did not ask about.

### Involve the buyer

Ask questions, pause for reactions, and let them describe how they would use it.

### Close with next steps

Agree on a dated action, such as a trial, a stakeholder meeting, or a proposal.

## Types of demos

* **Live demo:** Interactive and flexible, but depends on a stable environment.
* **Recorded demo:** Shareable with stakeholders who miss the call.
* **Self-serve demo:** An interactive tour a prospect explores alone, useful early in research.
* **Proof of concept:** A hands-on trial with their own data, used when the stakes are high.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Demoing before discovery:** Without knowing the problem, you show everything and land nothing.
* **Feature dumping:** Long tours bury the points that matter.
* **Wrong audience:** Showing a technical deep dive to an executive, or the reverse.
* **No decision path:** Ending with "let me know" instead of a next step.

---

## Example

Say a prospect said their reps lose time researching accounts. Open the demo on a finished account list, then show how it was built. The story follows their problem, not your menu.

---

## Demo vs. demo script

The demo is the session. A demo script is the prepared outline of talking points and flow behind it.

## Sales demo FAQs

**What is a sales demo?**

A sales demo is a walkthrough of a product, live or recorded, tailored to a prospect's needs. Its purpose is to show how the product solves their specific problems so they can evaluate fit and move toward a decision.

**How long should a sales demo be?**

Many teams aim for 30 to 45 minutes, including questions, though complex products may need longer. Focus on the prospect's top problems rather than filling time, and leave room to agree on next steps at the end.

**What should you do before a sales demo?**

Complete discovery, confirm who will attend, review their goals and objections, prepare the two or three workflows that matter most, and test your demo environment. Send an agenda so the buyer knows what to expect.

**What is the difference between a sales demo and a free trial?**

A sales demo is a guided presentation led by a seller. A free trial gives the prospect hands-on access to use the product themselves, often with less guidance. Teams frequently use a demo to introduce the product and a trial to validate it.
