[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Sales kickoff Sales # Sales kickoff (SKO) In short A sales kickoff (SKO) is a company event, usually held at the start of a fiscal year or half, that gets the sales organization aligned on goals, strategy, messaging, and skills. It is often a one- to three-day in-person or hybrid meeting. The SKO is where leadership explains the plan and reps leave knowing what to sell, to whom, and how. Its value is measured by what changes in the field afterward, not by how good the event felt. ## What a kickoff usually covers * **Company and sales goals:** Targets, quotas, and the reasoning behind them. * **Strategy and ICP:** Who to target and why, including segment or territory changes. * **Product and positioning:** New releases and the messaging to use. * **Skills training:** Practice on discovery, demos, or objection handling. * **Recognition and culture:** Awards and time for the team to connect. --- ## How to plan one ### Define the outcomes Decide what reps should do differently within 90 days, and design content around it. ### Involve the field Ask top reps and managers what they need. Let reps present wins. ### Favor practice over slides Role plays and working sessions stick better than long presentations. ### Include other teams Marketing, customer success, and product should explain how they support the plan. --- ## After the event Follow-up decides whether an SKO matters. Give managers a plan to reinforce the main messages in one-to-ones for the next quarter. Share recordings and the key materials in one place, and check skills with short call reviews or certifications. --- ## Common mistakes * **Too much content:** A packed agenda leaves reps remembering little. * **No follow-through:** Training that is never coached afterward fades within weeks. * **Leadership-only talk:** Reps disengage when no one asks for their input. * **Unclear measures:** Without a stated outcome, you cannot judge the event. --- ## Sales kickoff FAQs **What is a sales kickoff?** A sales kickoff, often called an SKO, is a meeting held at the start of a fiscal year or half where the sales team aligns on goals, strategy, product updates, messaging, and skills for the coming period. **When should you hold a sales kickoff?** Most companies hold one at the start of the fiscal year, and some add a mid-year event. Schedule it early enough that new targets, territories, and messaging are fresh before the first quarter's selling begins. **What should be on a sales kickoff agenda?** Include company goals and quotas, go-to-market strategy and ideal customer focus, product and positioning updates, hands-on skills practice, customer or rep success stories, and time for recognition. Keep sessions interactive instead of lecture-heavy. **How do you measure the success of a sales kickoff?** Pick outcomes beforehand, such as adoption of new messaging, call quality scores, or pipeline created on a new segment. Track them for the following quarter, and gather rep feedback on what was useful.
