[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Sales lead Sales Development & Prospecting # Sales lead In short A sales lead is an individual or organization that has shown some potential to buy, either by raising a hand or by matching your target profile. A lead is a possibility, not yet a confirmed opportunity with a real deal attached. Leads enter the pipeline from inbound sources such as form fills and content downloads, and from outbound work such as prospecting lists. What matters is how they are qualified and routed after that. ## Where sales leads come from * **Inbound:** demo requests, sign-ups, event scans, content downloads. * **Outbound:** lists built from your ICP and contacted by SDRs. * **Referrals:** customers, partners, and warm introductions. * **Signals:** hiring, funding, or tool changes that suggest need. --- ## Lead stages A common path runs from new lead to contacted, to qualified, to opportunity. Marketing qualified lead (MQL) and sales qualified lead (SQL) mark handoffs between teams. Define each stage in writing so everyone counts the same way. --- ## How to handle a new lead * Check fit against your ideal customer profile. * Respond fast, since speed to first contact affects whether the conversation happens. * Ask about the problem and timing, not just budget. * Record the source and next step in the CRM. --- ## Lead vs prospect vs opportunity A lead is an unvetted possibility. A prospect has been researched or qualified as a fit. An opportunity is a qualified deal with a defined need and an owner. Teams differ on where exactly the lines fall, so write down your own. --- ## Common mistakes * Treating every form fill as equally valuable. * Leaving leads unassigned for days. * Dropping leads that are not ready now instead of nurturing them. * Not tracking source, so you cannot tell which channels work. --- ## Sales lead FAQs **What is a sales lead?** A sales lead is a person or company that could become a customer and has been identified as worth contacting. It might come from a form fill, a referral, or an outbound list. It becomes an opportunity once need, authority, and timing are confirmed. **What is the difference between a lead and a prospect?** A lead is any potential buyer who has been identified, often with little vetting. A prospect is a lead that has been researched or qualified as a good fit and is being actively worked. Many teams use the words loosely, so define them internally. **How do you qualify a sales lead?** Check fit against your ideal customer profile, then confirm the problem, who decides, the timing, and any budget. A short discovery call or a scoring model can do this. Record the result in the CRM and route accordingly. **Where do sales leads come from?** Leads come from inbound sources such as website forms and events, outbound prospecting lists, customer referrals, partner introductions, and buying signals like funding or hiring. A healthy pipeline usually mixes several sources.
