# Sales-marketing alignment (Smarketing)

Also known as: smarketing

In short

Sales-marketing alignment, sometimes called smarketing, is the practice of getting sales and marketing to agree on who to target, how leads are defined and handed off, and which numbers they are both accountable for.

Without it, marketing optimizes for lead volume while sales complains about lead quality, and neither side can see where the funnel actually leaks. Alignment replaces that blame with shared definitions and shared metrics.

## What teams need to agree on

* **Target accounts:** One ideal customer profile and one target account list that both teams use.
* **Stage definitions:** What counts as a marketing-qualified lead, a sales-accepted lead, and an opportunity.
* **Handoff rules:** Who follows up, how fast, and what happens to leads that are not ready.
* **Shared goals:** Pipeline and revenue targets, not only leads for marketing and meetings for sales.

---

## How to build alignment

### 1. Write down the definitions

Put lead and opportunity definitions in one shared document. Many disputes come from two teams using the same word for different things.

### 2. Agree on a service level

Marketing commits to delivering a set number of qualified leads or accounts. Sales commits to contacting them within an agreed time and recording the outcome.

### 3. Create a feedback loop

Hold a regular meeting to review rejected leads and closed-won deals. Sales explains why leads failed, and marketing adjusts targeting and messaging.

### 4. Use one source of truth

Both teams should read the same CRM data and dashboards. Separate reports with different numbers restart the argument.

---

## A practical example

Say marketing is judged on leads and sales on closed revenue. Marketing hits its lead target, but few leads fit the ICP, so reps ignore them. After aligning on a target account list and a pipeline goal, marketing runs campaigns to those accounts, and sales follows up within a day. Both teams now see the same pipeline figure.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Alignment in name only:** A kickoff meeting without shared metrics changes nothing.
* **No ownership of the handoff:** Leads fall through when nobody owns the moment between teams.
* **Ignoring customer success:** Retention and expansion data tell both teams which customers are worth targeting.

---

## Alignment vs. revenue operations

Alignment is a goal and a set of agreements between two teams. Revenue operations is a function that builds the process, data, and tooling to keep sales, marketing, and customer success working from the same system.

## Sales-marketing alignment FAQs

**What is sales-marketing alignment?**

Sales-marketing alignment is when sales and marketing agree on target accounts, lead definitions, handoff rules, and shared revenue goals. It reduces friction between the teams and gives both the same view of pipeline and performance.

**What is smarketing?**

Smarketing is a blend of sales and marketing. It describes the two teams working together under shared goals and definitions, instead of operating as separate groups with their own metrics and priorities.

**How do you align sales and marketing teams?**

Agree on one ICP and target account list, write shared stage definitions, set a service level for lead follow-up, report on the same dashboards, and meet regularly to review rejected leads and closed-won deals.

**What metrics show sales-marketing alignment is working?**

Look at shared outcomes such as pipeline created from target accounts, lead-to-opportunity conversion, speed to follow-up, and the share of leads sales accepts. Rising acceptance and conversion suggest the teams agree on quality.
