# Sales objections

In short

Sales objections are the concerns, doubts, or reasons a prospect raises that slow or stop a purchase. Typical ones involve price, timing, trust in the vendor, competing options, or whether the product is needed at all.

An objection is information. It tells you where the buyer sees risk or missing value. This page covers the kinds of objections you will hear; the skill of responding to them is covered under objection handling.

## Common types of objections

* **Price:** "It costs too much." Often about value or budget approval, not the number itself.
* **Timing:** "Not now." Can be real priorities or a polite brush-off.
* **Need:** "We are fine today." The buyer does not feel the problem.
* **Authority:** "I have to ask others." You may not be speaking with the decision-maker.
* **Trust:** "We have not heard of you." Concerns about risk or proof.
* **Status quo:** "We use a spreadsheet." Switching feels harder than staying.

## What objections really mean

### Real objection

A specific barrier you can address, such as a missing integration.

### Stall

A reason to avoid saying no. Probing usually reveals it.

### Request for information

The buyer wants proof or detail before moving on.

---

## How to prepare

### Log them

Record the objections reps hear in the CRM and review the most frequent each quarter.

### Find the pattern

Frequent price objections may signal weak discovery or targeting, not weak rebuttals.

### Prepare evidence

Match each common objection with a story, data point, or reference.

### Fix upstream

If many leads object to the same thing, adjust your ideal customer profile or messaging.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Arguing:** Winning the point tends to lose the deal.
* **Answering too fast:** Reply before you understand the concern and you may answer the wrong one.
* **Ignoring it:** Unspoken objections come back as stalled deals.

## Sales objections FAQs

**What are sales objections?**

Sales objections are concerns or reasons a prospect gives for hesitating to buy. They commonly involve price, timing, need, authority, trust in the vendor, or reluctance to change from the current way of working.

**What are the most common sales objections?**

The most common are price, "not now" timing, no perceived need, needing approval from others, lack of trust in an unfamiliar vendor, and preference for the status quo. Track your own, as each team hears a different mix.

**Are sales objections a bad sign?**

Not necessarily. An objection shows the buyer is engaged enough to think about the purchase and tells you what concern needs addressing. Silence or vague answers are often a bigger risk than a direct objection.

**What is the difference between sales objections and objection handling?**

Sales objections are the concerns buyers raise. Objection handling is the skill and technique of responding to them: listening, clarifying the real concern, addressing it with evidence, and confirming it is resolved.
