[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Sales play RevOps & Pipeline # Sales play In short A sales play is a documented, repeatable response to a specific selling situation. It spells out the trigger, the target persona, the steps, the messaging, and the assets a rep should use. A play is narrower than a playbook. A sales playbook is the full collection of guidance for a team, and plays are the individual scenarios inside it. ## What a sales play contains * **Trigger::** The event or signal that starts the play, such as funding, a leadership change, or a renewal date. * **Target::** The accounts and personas the play applies to. * **Sequence::** The ordered steps across email, calls, social, and meetings, with timing. * **Messaging::** The value points, talk tracks, and discovery questions for that scenario. * **Assets and success measure::** The case studies or decks to use, and the outcome you track, such as meetings booked. --- ## Examples of sales plays Common plays include new-executive outreach, expansion into a new region, a competitive displacement, a customer upsell, and a re-engagement play for closed-lost deals. Say a team runs a "new VP of Sales" play. When a target account hires one, the owning rep sends a short congratulatory note, shares a relevant peer story in week one, and proposes a 20-minute call in week two. --- ## How to build a sales play ### 1. Pick a scenario that repeats Choose a situation that occurs often and has produced wins. Do not write plays for one-off cases. ### 2. Learn from your best reps Review won deals in that scenario and record what top reps actually did and said. ### 3. Pilot and refine Test it with a few reps, compare results with a control group, and update the steps based on what works. --- ## Common mistakes * Writing long documents that reps never open instead of short, actionable steps. * Launching plays with no trigger, so reps do not know when to use them. * Never measuring results, so weak plays stay in rotation. --- ## Sales play FAQs **What is a sales play?** A sales play is a repeatable set of steps, messages, and assets for a specific selling situation, such as a new executive hire or a competitive deal.
