[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Sales playbook RevOps & Pipeline # Sales playbook In short A sales playbook is a living document that captures how your team sells: who to target, what to say, how to handle objections, and what to do at each stage of a deal. It turns what your top reps do into something the whole team can repeat. A playbook is not the same as a sales process. The process says what stages exist. The playbook explains how to win each stage, with scripts, examples, and decision rules. ## What goes in a sales playbook * **Target customer:** Your ideal customer profile and the buyer personas to contact. * **Value messaging:** The problems you solve and how you describe them to each persona. * **Stage guidance:** What to do, ask, and send at each deal stage, plus exit criteria. * **Objection handling:** Common objections with tested responses. * **Competitive notes:** How to position when a rival is in the deal. * **Templates:** Email, call, and demo outlines reps can adapt. --- ## How to create one ### 1. Mine your wins Listen to recorded calls from closed-won deals and interview your best reps. Note the questions they ask and the order they ask them in. ### 2. Compare with losses Look for behaviors that separate wins from losses. Keep only the ones that show a pattern. ### 3. Keep it short and findable A 60-page PDF is not used. Put the playbook where reps work, such as the CRM or an internal wiki, and write each section so it can be read in two minutes. ### 4. Assign an owner and review it Give one person responsibility for updates. Revisit it every quarter and after any change in product, pricing, or target market. --- ## Types of playbooks * **By stage:** Prospecting, discovery, demo, negotiation. * **By persona or segment:** One version for finance buyers, another for technical buyers. * **By scenario:** Competitive deals, renewals, or expansion into a new team. --- ## Common mistakes * **Written once, never updated:** Outdated advice teaches reps to ignore the document. * **Written by people who do not sell:** Reps trust guidance from people who have closed the same deals. * **Rules without reasons:** Explain why a step works so reps can adapt it when a deal differs. --- ## Sales playbook FAQs **What is a sales playbook?** A sales playbook is a documented guide describing how a sales team finds, qualifies, and closes deals. It includes target customers, messaging, stage-by-stage actions, objection responses, and templates so reps can repeat what works. **What should a sales playbook include?** A good sales playbook includes the ideal customer profile, buyer personas, value messaging, stage guidance with exit criteria, discovery questions, objection handling, competitive positioning, and email or call templates that reps can adapt. **How is a sales playbook different from a sales process?** A sales process defines the stages a deal moves through. A sales playbook explains how to execute well within each stage, including what to say, ask, and send. The process is the map; the playbook is the driving advice. **How often should you update a sales playbook?** Review a sales playbook at least once a quarter, and whenever your product, pricing, competitors, or target market change. Use recent call recordings and closed-lost reasons to decide what to revise.
