[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Sales territory Market & Targeting # Sales territory Also known as: sales territories In short A sales territory is a defined group of accounts or prospects assigned to a rep or team, typically by region, industry, company size, or a combination. It sets who owns which accounts and prevents overlap. Good territory design gives every rep a similar chance to hit quota and ensures the whole market is covered. It is a core part of a coverage model. ## Common ways to split territories * **Geographic:** By country, region, or state. Simple, but account potential can vary widely between regions. * **Industry or vertical:** Reps build deep knowledge of one sector. * **Company size:** Separate SMB, mid-market, and enterprise reps. * **Named accounts:** Specific companies assigned by name. * **Hybrid:** A combination, such as region plus size segment. --- ## How to design territories ### 1. Size the market Count target accounts and estimate potential revenue by region or segment. ### 2. Decide the capacity per rep Say one rep can actively work 150 accounts. Divide the total by that number to estimate how many territories you need. ### 3. Balance potential, not just count Equal account counts can still be unfair if one set includes more large accounts. Weight by fit score or expected deal value. ### 4. Write assignment rules Define how new accounts are routed, how conflicts are resolved, and when territories get reviewed. --- ## Territory vs. named accounts A territory assigns by rule, so new matching companies join automatically. A named account list assigns specific companies. Many teams use territories for most reps and named accounts for strategic sellers. --- ## Common mistakes * **Splitting by count only:** Equal numbers do not mean equal opportunity. * **Rarely reviewing:** Markets and headcount change. Review at least yearly. * **Vague rules:** Unclear ownership leads to duplicate outreach and disputes. * **Ignoring travel or time zones:** Geography should reflect how reps actually work. --- ## Sales territory FAQs **What is a sales territory?** A sales territory is a defined set of accounts or prospects assigned to a rep or team, usually by geography, industry, company size, or a combination. It clarifies ownership, prevents overlap, and ensures the target market is covered. **How do you design a sales territory?** Size the market by counting target accounts, decide how many accounts a rep can work, divide accordingly, and balance territories by potential revenue rather than count alone. Write routing and conflict rules, then review at least once a year. **What are the types of sales territories?** Common types include geographic, industry-based, company-size-based, named-account, and hybrid territories. The right type depends on how your product is sold, how much specialist knowledge is needed, and how evenly accounts are spread. **How often should you realign sales territories?** Review them at least yearly, and sooner when headcount, product focus, or market coverage changes substantially. Frequent changes disrupt relationships, so balance fairness against continuity for accounts in progress.
