# Sandler selling

In short

Sandler selling is a sales methodology, also called the Sandler Submarine, that treats selling as mutual qualification between buyer and seller. The rep asks questions to uncover pain, budget, and decision process before any presentation.

Its core idea is that the rep and buyer are equals. The rep is free to disqualify as readily as the buyer is free to say no, which keeps time from going to deals that will not close.

## The core ideas

* **Upfront contracts:** Each meeting starts by agreeing on purpose, time, and possible outcomes, including a clear "no".
* **Pain:** Dig into the problem and its cost before discussing the product.
* **Budget:** Raise money early so late surprises do not kill the deal.
* **Decision:** Learn how and by whom the choice will be made.
* **Fulfillment and post-sell:** Present only what addresses confirmed pain, then confirm the buyer is committed and prevent buyer's remorse.

## How Sandler differs from other methods

Many frameworks focus on what to ask. Sandler focuses on how the conversation is controlled: the rep avoids pitching early and uses questions and agreements to keep the buyer honest. Compared with SPIN selling, which is a question sequence, Sandler is a broader behavioral approach.

---

## How to apply it

### Open with an upfront contract

State the agenda and agree on what happens at the end. For example, "By the end we will both decide whether a next step makes sense."

### Ask before you tell

Hold off on features until the buyer has described the problem and its impact in their own words.

### Qualify out early

If there is no pain, budget, or access to a decision maker, end the conversation politely and move on.

---

## Example

Say an AE opens a call by agreeing on thirty minutes and either outcome being fine. After questions, the buyer admits the problem is annoying but not urgent. The AE suggests pausing instead of sending a proposal, and avoids a deal that would have stalled.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Using it as a script:** Rigid scripts feel unnatural and erode trust.
* **Interrogating:** Questions without empathy make buyers defensive.
* **Never walking away:** The method only works if reps actually disqualify.

## Sandler selling FAQs

**What is Sandler selling?**

Sandler selling is a sales methodology that treats a sale as mutual qualification. The rep uses upfront contracts and questions to uncover pain, budget, and decision process before presenting, and is willing to walk away from poor-fit deals.

**What is the Sandler Submarine in sales?**

The Sandler Submarine is a diagram that maps the selling steps: bonding and rapport, upfront contract, pain, budget, decision, fulfillment, and post-sell. It shows the order in which a rep should cover each topic during a sale.

**What is an upfront contract in Sandler selling?**

An upfront contract is a short agreement at the start of a meeting covering its purpose, time, and possible outcomes, including that either side can say no. It sets expectations and reduces vague follow-ups and stalled deals.

**Is Sandler selling good for B2B sales teams?**

It suits teams with considered, multi-stakeholder deals where qualification matters. It is less necessary for very short, transactional sales. Success depends on coaching reps to use the principles naturally rather than as a rigid script.
