[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) SDR to AE ratio Sales Development & Prospecting # SDR to AE ratio (SDR to AE ratio) In short The SDR to AE ratio is the number of sales development representatives (SDRs) a company employs for each account executive (AE). It balances how many qualified meetings the front of the funnel creates against how many the closing team can handle. There is no universal correct ratio. The right number depends on deal size, sales cycle, how many meetings an AE can run, and how well SDR meetings convert. ## Why the ratio matters Too few SDRs and AEs run out of qualified meetings, leaving closing capacity idle. Too many and AEs are buried in meetings they cannot work well, so quality and follow-up drop. The ratio is a capacity-planning tool for the whole pipeline. --- ## How to work out your ratio ### Start from the pipeline target Work backward from the number of opportunities AEs need to create to hit quota. ### Estimate meetings needed Divide by your meeting-to-opportunity rate. ### Estimate SDR output Use realistic meetings per SDR per month, including ramp time. ### Divide SDRs needed equals meetings needed divided by meetings per SDR. --- ## Worked example Say each AE needs 12 new opportunities a month. If 40 percent of SDR meetings become opportunities, each AE needs 30 meetings. If an SDR books 15 meetings a month, you need two SDRs per AE. If your numbers differ, the ratio shifts. These figures are illustrative only. --- ## What changes the ratio * **Deal size:** larger deals need fewer, higher-touch meetings. * **Inbound volume:** strong inbound lowers the need for outbound reps. * **Tooling:** better data and automation raise output per SDR. * **Rep ramp time:** new SDRs take months to reach full output. --- ## Common mistakes * Copying another company's ratio. * Ignoring ramp time and attrition. * Measuring SDR output by meetings alone, not accepted opportunities. * Never revisiting the ratio as conversion rates change. --- ## SDR to AE ratio FAQs **What is the SDR to AE ratio?** The SDR to AE ratio is how many sales development reps a company has for each account executive. It is used to match the number of qualified meetings created at the top of the funnel with the number the closing team can handle. **What is a good SDR to AE ratio?** There is no single good ratio. It depends on deal size, sales cycle length, inbound volume, and how many SDR meetings convert to opportunities. Calculate it from your own pipeline targets and conversion rates rather than copying another company. **How do you calculate the SDR to AE ratio?** Work backward from the opportunities each AE needs to hit quota, divide by your meeting-to-opportunity rate to get required meetings, then divide by the meetings one SDR realistically books each month. Include ramp time for new hires. **What happens if the SDR to AE ratio is wrong?** With too few SDRs, AEs lack qualified meetings and pipeline stalls. With too many, AEs get overloaded, follow-up slips, and meeting quality and conversion fall. Review the ratio regularly as conversion rates and deal sizes change.
