# Search engine marketing (SEM)

In short

Search engine marketing (SEM) is the practice of promoting a business on search engine results pages to attract people who are actively searching. In day-to-day B2B use it mostly means paid search: bidding on keywords so your ad appears when someone types a matching query.

Some teams use SEM as an umbrella for both paid search and organic SEO. Others use it only for paid. Agree on the meaning internally so reports and budgets compare like with like.

## How search engine marketing works

You choose keywords, write ads, set a bid and a daily budget, and point each ad group to a landing page. When a search matches, the ad platform runs an auction that weighs your bid and the expected quality of your ad and page. You usually pay when someone clicks.

## Core parts of an SEM campaign

* **Keywords:** Group them by intent: problem-aware searches, solution searches, and competitor or category searches. Intent decides how close the searcher is to buying.
* **Match types:** Exact, phrase, and broad matching control how closely a query must resemble your keyword. Tighter matching wastes less money.
* **Negative keywords:** Terms you exclude, such as "free", "jobs", or "template", so you do not pay for the wrong audience.
* **Ad copy and landing page:** The ad promises something specific and the page delivers it, with one clear call to action.
* **Conversion tracking:** Measure demo requests or qualified signups, not just clicks.

---

## A simple B2B example

Say a team sells scheduling software to clinics. They bid on "clinic appointment scheduling software" with exact match, exclude "free" and "open source", and send clicks to a page about clinics only. Because the query shows clear intent, a visit is more likely to become a demo request than a click from a broad topic term.

---

## SEM vs. SEO

SEO earns organic rankings over time without paying per click. SEM buys placement immediately and stops when the budget stops. Many teams use SEM to test which keywords convert, then invest in SEO content for the winners.

---

## Common SEM mistakes

* **Counting clicks as success:** Cost per click says little. Track cost per qualified opportunity.
* **One landing page for everything:** Mismatch between query and page lowers conversion.
* **No negative keyword reviews:** Check search term reports weekly and add exclusions.
* **Ignoring sales feedback:** If reps say the leads are poor, tighten targeting even if form fills look good.

## Search engine marketing FAQs

**What is search engine marketing (SEM)?**

Search engine marketing is the practice of gaining visibility on search engine results pages, most commonly by paying for ads that appear when people search relevant keywords. It targets people with active intent and typically charges per click.

**What is the difference between SEM and SEO?**

SEO focuses on earning organic rankings through content, technical quality, and links, with no per-click fee. SEM, in its common meaning, buys paid placement for immediate visibility. SEO compounds slowly; SEM stops delivering when you stop spending.

**How much does search engine marketing cost?**

Cost depends on keyword competition, industry, and your quality score, since you pay per click in an auction. Competitive B2B software terms cost far more than niche ones. Set a budget you can test with, then judge by cost per qualified opportunity.

**Is search engine marketing worth it for B2B?**

It can be, when your buyers search for the problem you solve and your keywords show clear intent. It works less well for very small markets or categories nobody searches for. Test a small budget and measure pipeline, not clicks.
