[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Seniority level Data & Enrichment # Seniority level In short Seniority level is a standardized label for how senior a person is within their organization, for example entry level, manager, director, VP, or C-level. It is separate from job title, which is free text and varies from company to company. GTM teams use seniority to filter prospects, route leads, and match messaging to the buyer. A VP and an individual contributor care about different things, even when both work in the same department. ## Seniority vs. job title vs. department Filtering on all three together is far more precise than filtering on title keywords alone. * **Job title:** What the person is called, such as "Head of Demand Generation." It is inconsistent across companies. * **Department or function:** The area they work in, such as marketing or engineering. * **Seniority level:** How high they sit, such as director or VP. --- ## Common seniority levels * **Entry or individual contributor:** Hands-on practitioners and analysts. * **Manager:** Leads a small team or owns a program. * **Director:** Leads several teams or a function and often shapes budgets. * **VP and head of:** Owns a department strategy and usually signs off on tools. * **C-level and owner:** Executive decision makers and founders. --- ## How to use seniority in GTM Say a team sells a sales engagement platform. It might target directors and VPs of sales as economic buyers, and managers as champions who run it daily. * **Prospecting filters:** Combine seniority with function to build a list without guessing at title keywords. * **Messaging:** Executives want outcomes and risk. Practitioners want workflow detail. * **Lead routing:** Send senior contacts at target accounts to AEs, and others to SDRs. * **Buying committee coverage:** Check that you have contacts at more than one level in each account. --- ## Common mistakes * **Trusting titles at face value:** A "Director" at a 10-person startup is not the same as one at a 10,000-person company. Add company size. * **Targeting only the top:** C-level contacts rarely respond to cold outreach, and practitioners often start the evaluation. * **Inconsistent normalization:** If titles map to levels differently across sources, filters give uneven results. --- ## Seniority level FAQs **What is seniority level in B2B data?** Seniority level is a standardized label showing how senior a contact is within their company, such as manager, director, VP, or C-level. It lets teams filter and segment people consistently instead of relying on inconsistent free-text job titles. **What is the difference between seniority level and job title?** A job title is the free-text name a company gives a role, like "Head of Growth." Seniority level is a standardized category assigned to that title, like VP. Titles vary widely between companies, while seniority levels make comparison and filtering reliable. **How do you target the right seniority level in sales?** Match the level to the role in the deal. Directors and VPs often hold the budget, managers often run the tool day to day, and executives approve larger purchases. Reach several levels in each target account rather than only one. **How is seniority level determined in a database?** Data providers usually infer it by parsing the job title with rules or models and mapping it to a fixed list of levels. Because titles are messy, results are not perfect, so spot-check samples before relying on them.
