# Signal-based selling

In short

Signal-based selling is a sales approach where reps decide who to contact, when, and what to say based on signals that an account may be ready to buy. Signals include job changes, funding, hiring, tech changes, and engagement.

It shifts prospecting from working a static list in order to working the accounts with a current trigger. The idea is that a relevant, timely message gets more replies than a generic one sent to everyone.

## How signal-based selling works

### 1. Define your ICP

Signals only matter on accounts that fit. Build the target list first.

### 2. Choose signals

Pick a few that relate to your product, such as a new leader in your buyer’s function or a hiring surge in the team you serve.

### 3. Route alerts

Send each alert to the owning rep with the account, the signal, and the likely contact.

### 4. Act quickly

Follow up within a day or two with a message that references the signal in a useful way.

---

## Writing outreach from a signal

Lead with the situation, link it to a likely problem, and offer something specific. The signal should justify why you are writing now, not be the whole message.

* **Good:** Congrats on the new analytics team build-out. Teams scaling this fast often struggle with X. Here is one way others handle it.
* **Weak:** Saw you raised money. Want a demo?

---

## Example

Say a rep has 150 accounts. Instead of cycling through them alphabetically, they work the ten with a fresh signal each week, such as a new buyer-side hire or a pricing page return. The rep spends more time on a smaller set and writes a specific note for each.

---

## Signal-based selling vs. signal-based marketing

Signal-based selling prompts individual rep outreach. Signal-based marketing triggers scaled campaigns. They share the same signal sources.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Alert overload:** Too many low-value alerts train reps to ignore all of them.
* **No fit filter:** Reacting to signals on poor-fit accounts wastes time.
* **Slow response:** Signals fade. A week-old trigger is weaker than a day-old one.
* **Template-only outreach:** If every signal gets the same canned message, the benefit disappears.

## Signal-based selling FAQs

**What is signal-based selling?**

Signal-based selling is a sales approach where reps choose which accounts to contact, when, and what to say using live buying signals such as job changes, funding, hiring, and engagement, instead of working a static list in order.

**How does signal-based selling work?**

Teams define their ICP, choose a few relevant signals, and route alerts to the owning rep with context. The rep follows up quickly with a message that connects the signal to a likely problem and offers something useful.

**What signals should a signal-based selling team track?**

Start with signals that relate to your product: new executive hires in the buyer function, relevant job postings, funding, technology changes, and engagement such as pricing page visits. Add more only if they lead to meetings or pipeline.

**Does signal-based selling replace cold outreach?**

Not entirely. It makes outreach more targeted by adding a timely reason to reach out. Reps still contact people who have not asked to be contacted, but they choose accounts and messages with more context.
