# Social selling

In short

Social selling is the practice of using social networks, mainly LinkedIn in B2B, to find prospects, research them, share useful content, and build relationships that lead to sales conversations.

It is not posting memes or sending mass connection requests. The aim is to become a credible, familiar name to a buyer before or while you reach out directly.

## What social selling involves

* **Profile:** A clear profile that tells buyers who you help and how.
* **Listening:** Following target accounts and contacts to spot job changes, posts, and company news.
* **Engaging:** Commenting with substance on buyers' posts and sharing relevant insight.
* **Connecting:** Personalized requests that mention a real reason.
* **Moving offline:** Turning a warm interaction into a call or meeting.

---

## How to start

### Set up your profile for buyers

Lead with the customer problem you solve, not your job title. Make it clear what a prospect gains by talking to you.

### Build a target list to follow

Follow a manageable group of accounts and key contacts. Set aside fifteen minutes a day to review their activity and respond.

### Use triggers as conversation starters

A promotion, funding announcement, or relevant post is a natural reason to reach out. Reference it specifically.

---

## Example

Say a rep follows 40 target accounts. A head of marketing posts about struggling with lead routing. The rep leaves a helpful comment, connects with a short note, and later suggests a call after the contact replies to a follow-up message.

---

## Social selling vs. cold outreach

Cold outreach starts with an ask to a stranger. Social selling builds familiarity first, so the eventual ask lands warmer. The two work together: social activity improves response to emails and calls.

---

## Common mistakes

* **Pitching in the inbox:** Sending a sales message right after connecting feels like spam.
* **Automating engagement:** Generic comments are obvious and damage credibility.
* **Expecting instant pipeline:** It is a steady habit, not a campaign; judge it over months.

## Social selling FAQs

**What is social selling?**

Social selling is using social networks, mostly LinkedIn in B2B, to find prospects, research them, share useful content, and build relationships that lead to sales conversations. The goal is to be a known, credible name before pitching.

**How does social selling work on LinkedIn?**

Reps optimize their profile for buyers, follow target accounts, engage with relevant posts, send personalized connection requests, and share useful insight. Once there is a warm interaction, they move the relationship to a call or meeting.

**Is social selling the same as social media marketing?**

No. Social media marketing is a brand activity that publishes content to a broad audience. Social selling is individual, one-to-one relationship building by reps with specific prospects, though both can share content.

**How much time should a rep spend on social selling?**

A small daily habit is more effective than occasional bursts. Fifteen to thirty minutes a day reviewing target accounts, engaging with posts, and sending a few personal messages is a reasonable starting point for most reps.
