Sales Development & Prospecting

# Speed to lead

In short

Speed to lead is the time between a prospect taking an action, such as submitting a demo form, and a rep making first contact. It is measured in minutes or hours and applies mainly to inbound leads.

The idea is simple: interest fades fast. A person who just asked for a demo is thinking about the problem right now, and the first vendor to respond often shapes the conversation.

## How to measure speed to lead

Track the timestamp of the lead action and the timestamp of the first human touch (call, email, or message). The gap is your response time. Report the median and the share of leads contacted within your target window, since averages hide the slow outliers.

Count only real outreach by a person. An automatic confirmation email does not count as first contact.

## How to improve speed to lead

### Route instantly

Assign leads automatically by territory, segment, or round robin so none wait in a shared queue. Manual assignment is the most common source of delay.

### Alert the right person

Send a notification to chat or mobile the moment a lead arrives, with the lead's company, role, and what they asked for.

### Prepare the context

Enrich the lead on arrival so the rep sees company size, industry, and fit before reaching out. That makes a fast call a relevant call.

### Cover the hours

Use schedules or follow-the-sun coverage so form fills at night or on weekends are not left until Monday.

## Example

Say a team gets 100 demo requests a month and contacts most of them the next morning. They add automatic routing and a rep alert, and move first contact to within a few minutes during work hours. The team then compares how many leads book a meeting before and after. The comparison on their own data is what justifies further investment.

## Common mistakes

* **Speed without relevance:** A fast, generic reply is worse than a slightly slower, informed one for high-value accounts.
* **Treating all leads equally:** Prioritize good-fit leads first; do not spend minutes on obvious poor fits.
* **Single-touch response:** One quick email is not enough. Combine a call, an email, and a follow-up.
* **Ignoring non-form leads:** Chat requests and pricing page visits deserve the same urgency.

---

## Speed to lead vs. outbound speed

Speed to lead concerns reacting to someone who raised their hand. Outbound prospecting is the reverse: you choose when to contact. Timing in outbound is about picking the right moment, not racing the clock.

## Speed to lead FAQs

**What is speed to lead in sales?**

Speed to lead is the elapsed time between a prospect showing interest, such as filling out a demo form, and a salesperson making first contact. Teams track it because interest fades quickly and early responses tend to start stronger conversations.

**How fast should speed to lead be?**

There is no universal number. Many teams aim to reach inbound leads within minutes during business hours. Set a target based on your lead volume and staffing, then measure how contact timing relates to meetings booked on your own data.

**How do you calculate speed to lead?**

Subtract the time the lead took action from the time of the first human contact. Report the median and the percentage of leads contacted within your target window. Exclude automatic confirmation emails from the calculation.

**How can I improve speed to lead for my sales team?**

Automate lead routing, send instant alerts to reps, enrich leads on arrival so outreach is relevant, and cover off-hours with schedules. Prioritize good-fit leads and follow up with several touches, not a single email.
