Market & Targeting

# Spray and pray

In short

Spray and pray is a go-to-market approach where a team sends the same generic message to as many people as possible, with little targeting or personalization, and hopes a small percentage reply. The name describes the lack of aim.

It is the opposite of targeted, account-based outreach. It looks efficient because volume is high and cost per message is low, but it spends sender reputation, rep time, and goodwill on prospects who were never a fit.

## What spray and pray looks like

* **Huge lists, no filters:** Contacts bought or scraped with only a job title in common.
* **One template for everyone:** The same email to a startup founder and a bank CIO.
* **Fake personalization:** Only a first name and company are merged in.
* **Activity as the goal:** Success is measured by emails sent, not meetings held.

---

## Why it fails

* **Deliverability damage:** High bounce and spam-complaint rates can push your domain into spam folders, which also hurts your good emails.
* **Wasted rep time:** Reps handle replies and objections from people who will never buy.
* **Brand cost:** Irrelevant outreach teaches the market to ignore you.
* **Compliance risk:** Mass unsolicited email can breach privacy and anti-spam rules depending on region.

## What to do instead

### Define the target first

Start with an ideal customer profile and a target account list. Only people at accounts that pass your filters get outreach.

### Match message to reason

Say a team has 2,000 accounts. Split them into three groups by industry and trigger, and write one message per group about a problem that group has. That is far more relevant than one message to all 2,000.

### Measure outcomes

Track reply quality, meetings booked, and pipeline per account, not just send volume.

---

## Is volume ever fine?

Volume is not the problem. Poor targeting is. A large list of well-matched contacts, with a relevant message, is not spray and pray. Test small, check results, and scale only what works.

---

## Spray and pray vs. account-based approaches

Spray and pray optimizes for reach. Account-based approaches optimize for relevance to a chosen set of accounts. The first widens the funnel; the second picks who belongs in it.

## Spray and pray FAQs

**What does spray and pray mean in sales?**

It means sending the same generic message to a very large, loosely targeted list and hoping a few people respond. It relies on volume rather than fit or relevance, so it tends to produce low reply quality and damage sender reputation.

**Why is spray and pray bad for outbound?**

It sends messages to people who are unlikely to buy, which raises bounce and spam complaints, harms email deliverability, wastes rep time, and weakens your brand. Better targeting usually produces more meetings from fewer messages.

**How do you avoid spray and pray prospecting?**

Define your ICP, build a target account list, group accounts by shared pain or trigger, and write a relevant message for each group. Measure meetings and pipeline instead of emails sent, and cut segments that do not respond.

**Is high-volume outreach always spray and pray?**

No. High volume to a well-defined, well-matched audience with a relevant message is not spray and pray. The term describes poor targeting and generic content, not the number of messages you send.
