[GTM glossary](/glossary.txt) Stage conversion rate RevOps & Pipeline # Stage conversion rate In short Stage conversion rate is the percentage of deals or leads that advance from one defined stage of the funnel to the next. The formula is the number that reached the next stage divided by the number that entered the current stage. Unlike an overall win rate, stage conversion rates show where in the process the funnel leaks. They help RevOps and sales leaders decide which stage to fix first. ## How to calculate it Pick a cohort of opportunities that entered a stage in a given period, and count how many later moved to the next stage. Say 100 opportunities entered discovery and 60 advanced to evaluation. The discovery-to-evaluation conversion rate is 60 percent. Example numbers only. Multiplying the stage rates together gives the overall rate from first stage to closed-won. --- ## Cohort vs. period method * **Cohort:** Follows the same group of deals over time. More accurate, but you must wait for the cycle to finish. * **Period:** Divides stage exits by entries in the same month. Quicker, but distorted when volume is changing or the cycle is long. --- ## How to use stage conversion rates ### Find the biggest leak Compare each stage rate to your own history and to your sibling segments. The weakest stage is the place to coach or change the process. ### Segment the data Break rates out by source, segment, region, and rep. An average can hide one channel that converts well and another that does not. ### Feed the forecast Stage rates are the basis for weighted pipeline and for estimating how much top-of-funnel you need. --- ## Common mistakes * **Fuzzy stage definitions:** If reps move deals without exit criteria, the rates are unreliable. * **Skipped stages:** Deals that jump stages distort rates; decide how to count them. * **Immature cohorts:** Recent deals have not had time to convert, which makes rates look low. * **Tiny samples:** Rates from a handful of deals are noise. --- ## Stage conversion rate FAQs **What is stage conversion rate?** Stage conversion rate is the percentage of leads or opportunities that advance from one stage of the sales pipeline to the next. It shows how well each step of the process turns activity into progress. **How do you calculate stage conversion rate?** Divide the number of opportunities that moved from a stage to the next stage by the number that entered the first stage, then multiply by 100. Use a defined cohort of deals so the result is not skewed by timing. **What is the difference between stage conversion rate and win rate?** Stage conversion rate covers movement between two adjacent stages, while win rate is the share of opportunities that end closed-won. Win rate is roughly the product of all stage conversion rates across the funnel. **How do you improve stage conversion rate?** Find the stage with the weakest rate, then investigate why deals stall there: poor qualification, missing stakeholders, or unclear exit criteria. Fix that cause, tighten stage definitions, and track the rate by segment to confirm the change.
